Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Can we run the midline to the open side vs a 5-2 monster cover 1? Assuming our center can handle the nose. They play a 0,4i,9 on bothe the open and TE side. The monster linebacker sits outside our flexed TE. The other 2 linebackers are in a 30 look.
The problem with the midline is that it's only good vs. a 3 technique when the 3 technique is the first playside defensive lineman. Other than that, it's a tough play to run. If you do not get a 3 technique that is the first playside defensive lineman, you have to drive/reach at the point of attack to make the play work. I started running midline back in 1998 when very few others were running it, and have drawn the conclusion that statistically, it's a short-term solution to running the triple option. It's a play that you need better personnel than your opponent to run (when you don't get the 3 tech. as your 1st playside lineman) and in my OPINION, that defeats the whole purpose of running the triple option.
The veer is the play that you can beat people with execution instead of personnel, because you 1. block the fewest people possible; 2. conflict the force player/force players to beat blocks in order to stop the dive (they can't do both-- if read key takes dive and pitch key takes QB... the ball is pitched outside the force-- if read key takes QB and pitch key takes pitch... blocked defenders must stop the dive-- the defense can't ever be right).
I went on bit of a tangent there, but after studying run offense with Steelers' OL coach Larry Zierlein and others, I found that midline is not a long-term answer to an effective run offense due to relying on probability for success.
My advice-- run the veer. It can be run vs. ANYTHING!

Your last sentence shows me your learning just how effective both ISV/OSV really are. If I had not made the switch to the 3 x 2 which is 20 years or more now, I would still be running it out of the "I"
as to me it is, and always will be, an outstanding offense to run. The only MAJOR DRAWBACK is that it is not a come from behind offense as it is just not designed for big chunks of yardage at a time. But, if you have the horses to grind it out and play ball control, it is one heck of a winner!!!
Good luck on your opener with Bucknell this Saturday...... GATA!!!

Can we run ISV to a 4i or is the read too close. What about the tackles release?
We are a 12-14 yr old team running option for the first year. So we are not proficient yet. The good news is we are the first in this league to run option and no one knows how to defend it yet.
We run option on me. Complete audible system for all of our option plays. So we can adjust at the line to the look. Stunts will give us a problem though.
Assuming that our center is better than their nose. Is running to a nose and a 4i not feasible with midline?
Coach Cella and Coach Easton are better resources than I but I think you can run ISV, the OT releases outside the 4i on to the PSLB. Just make sure the OG knows to be aware of that PSLB in case he blitzes inside the 4i.
The 4i will probably have dive, if so, pitch off the 9. They will need to have their secondary help out to stop this so have a PA pass ready to go.
I learned from Jim McNally, Bills Offensive Line coach, that if you get a 4i, the gap must DIE! This means that if you get a 4i, the split between the guard and the tackle must go foot to foot in order to make that 4i technique become a 3 technique. I would then run inside veer.
If a defense gives you a 4i you can TECHNICALLY still run midline if your fullback reads the center's block on the nose, you arc release your offensive tackle to the C gap defender, and base everyone else; however, after ten years of running midline and, coincidentally, preparing for a team that runs midline this week (Bucknell), I know that if you are going to run midline successfully without getting a 3 technique to be the 1st playside DL, you need better people to make midline work in a consistent manner. In my opinion, this completely defeats the purpose of running the triple option, because true triple option coaches don't run the midline to look FANCY... they run it because they BLOCK FEWER DEFENDERS AND THEY CAN EFFICIENTLY MOVE THE BALL WITHOUT SUPERIOR PEOPLE.
I hope I answered your questions and welcome further discussion on this topic.

I doubt we could be considered good yet. I think we have potential but lack game experience. We play a lot of 5 and 6 man lines so I am trying to figure out which options work best vs various fronts that we will see. We have audibles for all of our option plays so I want our QB to know what to call. In the first game 90% of our option game was OSV to the TE.
What is Jim saying when he says they must go foot to foot? Wouldn't that screw up the ISV running lane?
What am I failing to see in his statement? It seems to me that if your trying to reduce a 4i to a 3, the guard would EXPAND not REDUCE. If he does that, it can only give the LB's a bigger gap to shoot through.
Help me out here with his thinking if you can find the time, I know your busy.

Jerry, it's one of those things where I would need to get a greater explanation from Jim about it, but it has something to do with eliminating the threat of the gap player. It's a good follow-up question, Jerry, but it's one of those things that he has not completely explained why to me.

I know you have a lot of experience with this offense. Is there any way you wold consider breaking down some tape of one of our games to tell me how to coach these kids (12-14) better?
I WOULD LOVE TO DO THAT FOR YOU. JUST SEND ME THE TAPE TO: COACH J.C.EASTON
214 BROWN RD.
ANDERSON, SC 29621
I WILL BREAK IT DOWN AND THEN SEND MY RESULTS AND THE FILM BACK TO YOU. LOOKING FORWARD TO DOING THIS AS I DO IT FOR A LOT OF COACHES THIS TIME OF THE YEAR AND ONE MORE IS NO PROBLEM.

Yes, I certainly did and have had my breakdown for you for over a week. I am very glad you posted as I had deleted your email by accident and had no idea how to get in touch with you. Please email me at :

POWER DIVES! BETTER YET, DON'T RUN IT AT ALL AND THROW SMASH AGAINST COVER #2, 4 VERTICALS, TEXAS (INFLUENCE LB'S TO VACATE MOF AND HIT BACK OUT - JOE MONTANA AND ROGER CRAIG MADE THIS FAMOUS DURING THE GOLDEN YEARS OF THE 49'ers.) BEST OF ALL, GO TO A 3 X 2 SPREAD AND RUN 5 DEEP VERTICALS!!! Spread your 5 receivers from sideline to sideline in the PSL, and if they don't man up, your home free, just take your pick of the best open receiver in the zone coverage and throw the fire out of it. Just a suggestion as always.
