WOULD LIKE SOME IMPUT ON 44 COACHES THE USE 2 DEEP AS PART OF THIER PACKAGE. SOME LIKE ROLLING THE STRONG CORNER UP, KICKING THE FS STRONG ON THE HASH,WITH THE WEAK CORNER ALSO ON THE HASH. THIS WOULD MEAN THE WOLB WOULD HAVE TO BE A PRESS TECH ON NUMBER 1 WEAK. I HAVE ALSO SEEN BOTH CB ROLLED UP AND THE WOLB PUT ON THE HASH WITH THE FS. I THINK BOTH HAVE MERIT BUT WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF YOU KEEP THE 44 LOOK WITH THE REMAINING FRONT 7 OR DO YOU KICK TO A 43 LOOK?ALSO, DO YOU KICK TO A COVER 3 VS 4 ON BALL OR DO YOU PLAY CALL COVERAGE? THANKS FOR YOUR TIME GLAZE
Here is another option that I've seen some teams do to get into a cover 2 look out of a 4-4.
They'll move their OLB's out to the wideouts, drop the corners back as 1/2 safeties, and walk the FS up as a LB to the strong side. They keep their ILB's inside as much as possible.
Coach Glaze, We don't play a 4-4, but the drop end in our 5-2 is similar. Rather than having WOLB play press on # 1 weak, how about simply walking him outside to put himself in the quick passing lane. This way he can be in position to stop the wide run his way and still play the curl to flat when he reads pass.
When I coached in New Jersey a few years ago, we tried running cover 2 out of a 4-4. The problem we encountered is that when an offense motioned against it, we had to check out of it. Personally, it is too difficult to run in a 4-4. If you like cover 2 that much, you should run a 7-man front such as a 4-3, 5-2, or a 6-1.
