Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
11/12 year old team that plays an odd front: 0 and 4 tech down lineman, stand up 9 techs that play contain, 2 deep safeties, man coverage (haven't been taught any zone coverage)
Next team we face comes out in a single back trips (split end, slot, and wing) and back side tight end. They run a swing/flat pass to the wing behind the routes of the SE and slot. Assuming corner over to cover the slot, what is the best way to cover the flat/swing route by #3? bring a safety down? walk out the trips side ILB and leave the inside run vulnerable? teach the 9 tech to play the flat and bring the ILB on pressure (if so, how do you teach the 9 to play contain on run and watch the wing? Any other suggestions?
This team also runs a toss to the trips side as well and will reverse the wing back once they've established the toss.
Any thoughts on how to coach up/play these plays...
In a "COVER 3 SKY" - the S/S "triangles" (splits the difference & 3-4 yds deep) the #2 & #3 receivers (counting from outside in). This is a STANDARD adjustment. As to IF you need to walk another LBer out just inside #3 - it depends on where they are hurting you.
All of your ideas are sound, IMO. If you prefer to maintain your two deep look, have the 9 tech. line up outside the wing. That way you will have them outnumbered on the toss to the trips side and the 9 tech can peel off with the wing if he runs the flat/wing. Remind him he can be physical with that man until the ball is thrown.
If the wing runs a vertical route, your FS can pick him up. If the wing runs a quick in-breaking route, your ILB is there. In either of these situations, the 9 tech. should rush the QB (you may wish to have him peel off on the back out his way as well). Rep your 9 techs on getting a read off the WB and taking appropriate action. This would include shouting "reverse" if the WB runs back into the backfield. Obviously, the other 9 tech. needs to force that play inside.
Bill,
Thanks for the prompt reply. I only wish there were more than four practices avaliable to coach/install Cover Three. I guess we'll leave that to the high school...
Coach Scott,
Thanks for your input. I believe you provided some excellent keys that will allow us to stay in our base and make minimal adjustments. I'm certain that's the key to running a defense, especially at this level!
Looks like the 9s need to be taught well this week. I particularly like playing the wing hard until the ball's in the air and key him for a 'reverse' call. It's only fair the DEs call out reverse after all the time s they benefited from a 'crack' call from the CBs ;-)
ALLL you have done is "reduce" to SE side. De goes from a 9 to a 5 (plays the technique the same); DT goes from a 4 to a 3. ILB moves out on H. NOTHING ELSE CHANGES FROM YOUR "BASE".
