Coaches; Can we generate some thoughts as to how we, as coaches really design our programs to enhance our players to the best of their abilities? How much running, weigth training conditioning and agility work can be done and when to be done (i.e. time of year)?
I suggest that is necessary to have a year-round plan in order to be successful.
I believe a coach must balance football and home life somehow. This is my forth year coming up as the head coach. I am learning to put together a calendar of when things should be done. Pre-season meetings and such. For example, today we had our meeting to tell the kids our schedule for 2003. It turns out from Tues. Feb 25 until Friday Sept 12, our first game, we have
200 days 4800 hours 288,000 minutes 17,280,000 seconds.....................................................................
Coach Madden: You are absolutely correct!! Our spiritual life first, family second and our jobs third!! However, in order to achieve these goals, we must have ayearly plan or at least an idea of whar we are doing when in order to best facilitate our programs and athletes.
I read an article recently that DeLaSalle has a 49-week strength and conditioning program. They work out three days a week for 49 consecutive weeks. The only three weeks that everyone is off is between their last game and Christmas.

Coach Lad at DeLaSalle runs his program from the day that the students arrive back from Christmas break to the last day of the season. Coach Lad has his players heavily involved in running. They lift, but the focus is on a strenuous running program.

Could you please elaborate on what you mean by a "sternuous runnig program". Is it mostly sprints, hills, stadium workouts etc. Also how to you about fartleck training for football?
Does anyone have a yearly checklist of things to do? when I was at a Mega clininc this past off season I went to a session where a coach had everything broken down by month and what he had to focus on. Everything from ordering equipment to college recruiting. Does anyone have anything like this?

I watched the De La Salle game on Friday night and they were talking about the desire of the DLS players and Coach L had to tell them to take days off. So its really a different breed at that school. No one wants to be on the team that lost.
