Coaches,
I would like some advice as to how you run your programs at the lower levels. Let me give you some background info before I ask specific questions. I am the head 9th grade coach at my high school (we have grades 9-12). Due to the way our school district sets up its boundaries, we get students from 4 middle schools. We get 100% of kids from one middle school and approximately 5-10% of kids from the other three middle schools. Because of this set up, the middle school football coaches have very little to do with us at the high school. Also, our district does not have 7th grade football, only 8th grade. The 8th grade coach at our main feeder school is doing a better job of running our system (at least he uses the same terminology now), but basically when I get them in August, they have very little knowledge of our system, both offensively and defensively (and special teams of course). When we get into games, we usually get beat pretty bad the first several games because we play against teams that have one feeder middle school and they have 7th grade football, so they start their programs in 7th grade. Several questions I have are: How do you teach your system at the lower levels? How basic or complex do you allow your lower level coaches get? Are there any ways to help the learning process so the 9th graders can pick up the system faster? Is there a way to organize the teaching of our system to implement it faster? It this helps, we run a 4-3 defense and a multiple formations offense. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
