I am looking for some helpful advice on getting our youth program started. We are looking to keep things very simple because we are coaching a youth team of 8-10 year olds. We will have about 20 kids, but we are really low on good talent this year. We might get a couple to pop up before the season starts, but we won't really have that go to kid, that we would like to have. We have a great defensive coach, and a good defensive plan. However, we are looking to start our offensive plan and would like some advice on how to install a simple offensive package for a somewhat undertalented youth team.

It's also difficult getting good advice from other coaches, because most want you to run their system, whether it fits or not. So I'm hoping that some of you knowledgable coaches will take the time to help out a youth coach. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wheter it be wishbone or wing-t or what not, because I havent seen many youth team able to pass the ball all over the field.

I believe you select no more than 5 base run plays and a couple pass plays....don't get caught up in "getting the ball to by best player", etc....and drill, drill, drill on good, sound, solid fundamentals. Spend the majority of your time on blocking, tackling, carrying the ball, etc. Teach the kids the fundamentals and focus on that during your practices. Play all the kids, let them have fun and teach them the fundamentals of the game. I would suggest you, if you haven't already, contact a local, respected high school or college staff and see if you can't sit with them and absorb as much as you can about the fundamentals of the game. These things are so often ignored at the youth level because too many coaches get caught up in trying to "out scheme" other teams to get the win. Our local boy's club coaches have never accepted our staff's invitations to attend a clinic we propose to put on specfically for them....this amazes me. Fundamentals and participation should be the focus of all youth programs and through the freshman year of high school with gradual introduction of schemes. As a high school football coach, I know that if the fundamentals were emphasized more at the lower levels, once they get to the HS level our players would have a much greater foundation from which to build. Make a permanent mark on the lives of these young kids by establishing a foundation that will endure for many years. Just my opinion...pdow.

i think the double wing is a great youth offense & can be successful with a minimum of talent. www.coachwyatt.com is a good DW site. forums.delphiforums.com/dwingers/start is a youth coaches forum with a heavy DW influence. the coaches there are very helpful. hope this helps.

Hi coach, I have coached at the youth level 5-6 grade and 7-8 grade. I currntly coach high school. I believe in very basic football for offense at the youth level. As stated before fundamentals win especially at the youth level. Here is what we did.

"I" formations: wing, pro, slot, double tight and power.
Run plays: Dive, Iso, toss, sweep, QB sneak, QB keeper (bootleg of toss).
Pass Plays-from pro (max protect): double slant, double hitch, double out, etc.
If you get this far, try play action, iso pass or tailback toss pass.
use a simple even/odd numbering scheme. We used to like to name our plays. Be inventive the kids love it. For example: double tight iso from power was called "rice & beans" when we got near the goal line the kids would all start shouting "rice & beans, rice & beans". Have fun and good luck.
