YELLOW ZONE: Also known as the Coming Out Zone. It is the area of the field between the offense’s own goal line and their own 15-yard line. The chances of an offense scoring from a drive starting in the Yellow Zone is remote – less than 10%. The first goal of the offense is get one first down to give themselves good punting position. If they can keep the drive going after getting that first first down and advance past the 15, they can begin to open up the offense a little more.

GREEN ZONE: The area field from the offense’s own 15-yard line to the opponent’s 20 yard like. When they have the ball in this part of the field, an offense can be free-wheeling – look for play action, and down-the-field passes.

RED ZONE: From the opponent’s 20 yard line to the opponent’s 4 yard line. This is the “must score” area for the offense. The offense needs to be on the alert for blitzes and man to man coverage on the receivers.

GOAL LINE ZONE: From the opponent’s 4 yard line to the opponent’s goal line. If an offense has a first down in this area, their mission is to get two or more yards on the first snap. If they do, that would give them less than a yard to gain on each of the next consecutive snaps in order to score. If they don’t get two yards on the first play, the offense may have to change it’s approach. That’s where the strategy of goal line offense comes in.
