Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am new here and as it looks,,, like I am in the right place.
A little background. I am currently the Varsity Linebackers and Special Teams Coach. Our season just ended and in my year end evaluation the Head Coach has informed me has let go of our Defensive Coordinator and wants to promote me into the position. As this last season progressed I could tell our HC was upset with our scheme on defense, so I saw this coming. I have accepted the position and am really excited to start next season right now.
Then our HC informs me he wants to run a basic 4-4 with a cover 3 as our base defense. And keep the defense very simple for the players (we have a young but very good up and coming team). Our defense last year was a 3-4 with the linebackers doing alot of coverage and blitz packages (thus the need for some simplification).
Onto my question:
I will have 52 returning players to the program and about 18-22 freshman. We are going to work from a clean slate of who will play what positions. What would you all consider to be the type of player you would want in these positions and what responsibilities would they have? I know this is really open ended so any feedback you could provide would be awesome! Thank you in advance.

Looking at our returning depth chart I am going to have 3 or 4 great options at MLB. And do really good DE's. I may have to convert a MLB to another position to get a guy one of them on the field. I have about 6 or 7 kids for the secondary all about the same talent level. The offseason may determine who starts out out on 1st team. My DT's are going to need work. The guys that have the size and strength, are the ones who need the most motivation to play hard. I have work there to do. OLB is wide open!
GET AFTER THEIR A.. (GATA) HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE SAYING! NOW, IN THE OFF SEASON IS THE PERFECT TIME TO START DOING ALL THE THINGS NECESARY TO FINDING THEIR "HOT BUTTONS"
THAT REALLY GETS THEM MOTIVATED TO PLAY BEYOUND THEIR NORMAL TALENT LEVELS ON GAME NIGHT! GET THOSE BIG SLOW TACKLES ON THE DOTS AND ON THE JUMP ROPES AND ON THE LADDDER DRILLS!!! IF WHAT YOU HAVE ARE LAZY AND DON'T WANT TO WORK, GO WITH MAYBE A SMALLER KID BUT WHO WILL GIVE YOU EVERYTHING HE HAS TO GIVE FOR THE GOOD OF THE TEAM! MAKE THEM REALIZE IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO PLAY FOR THEIR SCHOOL AND IF THEIR HEARTS AREN'T IN IT, GET THEIR BUTTS OUT!!! ALWAYS WORKED FOR US.

There are some guys on this forum that really know their stuff & I'm sure you will find the help you need here. This is my first post but I have visited many times before. Anyway, I think I can help you out. I installed our system for the 2006 season and it is fairly simple but sound and effective for us. Email me and give me your phone # or I'll give you mine so we can share some ideas and discuss it further. There's just too much to cover on a message board post.
I have used this defense for 20 years. The 7 tech needs to be your best and toughest defensive lineman. We wrong shoulder everything. Your strong side olb need to be a flat out tough, nasty player, and your safety must come up and make big playes as well as cover the pass. Drill techniques and responsibilities. Also, know that the offenses will go twins, unbalanced, and spread to see what your adjustments will be. If seeing an option team, many flexbone teams will use a te and go se over or run OS veer to see if you defend the 3 basic perimeter blocking schemes. Good luck.
I spent the weekend snowed in so I got a chance to study a good deal of game films and from what I noticed in some of our players was a lack of "staying home". It is brutal to watch the OLB who has flat responsibility get sucked in so many times. That is going to be a priority next year.
Totally agree about what some of you are saying about the DTs. I have a few really dedicated guys hitting the weight room now and one of them is a DT that I think will get into the lineup strictly due to his work ethic.
As I am putting together my defensive playbook and looking at films. I see a need for some 4-3 cover 4 out of our base 4-4. Depending on down and distance I could see sending in a 4th DB and taking out a MLB to use the cover 4. I notice on film many teams "flooding the zone" in cover 3 situations.
Replacing a LB with a DB is how we generally establish our "nickel" package (5 defensive backs) out of most conventional defenses. But, in our 4-2-5 where we allude to our twin Safties as DB's and not OSLB's, we are always in a nickel. Now, when we replace a LB with another DB, we are in our "dime" package.
