I'm looking for anyone who runs a 4-2-5 defense who would be willing to send me info about it. I'm mostly interested in alignment vs. formations and coverages.
I have been trying to initiate a switch to the 4-2-5 for 2 seasons now. I am also interested in how other coaches run it. I picture it as 2 DL, 2 OLB (DE positioning), 2 ILB, 1 Rover/Monster/Bandit (best defensive player), 2 corners (best man-coverage guys) & 2 cover 2 safeties (BIG HITTERS). This type of defense works against all formations and systems. Tampa Bay calls it a 4-3, but it is trully a 4-2-5 because their 3rd and 4th LBs are really Strong Safety types.
Any coach(s) that really understands responsibilities and coverages, please speak up. This is one of the defenses that there is not enough information about. I know Miami (FL) runs a version of it (CANES?), and I think Texas A&M (4-7?) might. The Arizona Desert Swarm is sort of the same thing but I think it is a 3 down lineman version (3-3-5?).
I would really be interested in anything anyone can contribute.
We run the 4-2-5. We took most of what we do from TCU. Gary Patterson is great. He will sit down with you and give you what ever you want. If I can help let me know.
I have been running a 4-4 (really a wide tackle-6) since 1976. We play with 2 DE's and 2 DT's. The 2 LB's are true LB-types, while the OLB to the TE is usually a LB with good speed. The OLB to the SE side is more of a true SS-type player. When we go to our 4-3 scheme, the SE OLB is the player who becomes the 4th DB who plays deep 1/2 or 1/4. We will run all kinds of stunt combinations. If yo have any questions, drop me a line.
