Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coach, hope all is well with you and your family. Got a question. Just watched 3 tapes of a West Va. offensive team. What would their adjustments be to man to man defense? I know pick routes and such, but in 3x1 or 2x2 they have a possible 7 coming. I know the bottom line is they have to get the ball off before the pocket crashes. I just want to see the patterns and adjustments you would make b/c I have some ideas I want to try vs this type of team next season. Thanks and have a great holiday. Nick
IN REREADING YOUR POST TO ME, I WOULD DO THE FOLLOWING OFFENSIVELY IF THEY MAN UP:
Against man cover schemes we are first and foremost always going to look for MATCHUPS we can win! Example: 5'8" CB verses my 6' 4" receiver, etc. Next, does the man scheme call for "sitting off" or rolled up hard with inside leverage? This dictates to me what I am going to want to call. If sitting off in what I call "loose man" I am going to take advantage of the quick slants first and foremost. If they are rolled up hard with inside leverage to take the slants away, I am going to call fades, quick outs by the WR's and verticals and seam routes by the inside receivers to put the safties in a bind by blowing the cover off the top.

My answer to your latest question may seem a bit unorthodox to you, but that is ok as I have never been one to follow other people's way of doing things very much.
First off, we do not have "hots" per se. Coach, "hots" are not as open as they appear to be because a good DC will have hot receivers accounted for, as well as, any other receiver.
My answer to the blitz scenario is to have my receivers and QB's both read the defense, not just the QB.
First off , we teach the QB how to read an impending blitz in the PSL, as much as is possible. Although we do not have a preconceived receiver DECIDED upon in the PSL, we do teach our QB's to HAVE AN IDEA WHERE HE WANTS TO GO WITH THE BALL ON THE SNAP. What we do next is to take advantage of the hour upon hour we put in with our QB's and receivers repping every possible situation they can see on game night. The receivers read blitz coming, the QB reads blitz coming, they both know where the receiver will be headed on the snap for that particular look they are getting! TIMING IS EVERYTHING IN THE PASSING GAME COACH, AND IN THESE BLITZ SITUATIONS IT BECOMES EVEN MORE CRITICAL IN MY OPINION. THAT IS WHY REPPING OVER AND OVER AGAIN IS SO IMPORTANT TO BOTH QB AND RECEIVERS. Teach the receivers to read the same thing the QB is reading and you will be way ahead in the blitz beating game!

JOE THEISMAN once said he did not like his receivers reading because he never knew if they were seeing things the same as he saw them. I, personally, heard Joe Montana once say he was never comfortable throwing a particular route until he had repped it 2,500 times with his receivers. Now brother, that is a lot of reps! But, that logic appealed more to me than theisman's did and always did my best to make sure we were seeing things the same.

I am the defensive guy and am glad you are not in my league. I have the same theory as you offensively-not as detailed in HS, but the foundation. You have to give DC's sleepless night before gametime. Is there a good manual on calling a spread game versus certain coverages? You have no idea how defensively I want to be in this guys head next year. He's the guy who gives fb coaches a bad rap. Anyway, have a great holiday.
FORGOT TO MENTION LAST NIGHT, COACH, THE FIRST REAL READ OF YOUR QB AFTER LOCATING THE SAFETIES IS TO LOOK FOR ANY UNCOVEREDS!!! I USE THE RULE OF THUMB IF THE DEFENDER IS OFF MORE THAN 7 YDS THAT RECEIVER IS UNCOVERED.
