I'm in Western NY and can't apply for it. However, for anyone who wants to just blow this off because it's women, don't. I was an assistant coach for a women's team for two years at one point. It was a great experience. The women are there because they really, really just want to play football. They are competitive and work hard. And above all else, they are willing to listen and learn. I got the least amount of excuses and back talk from that team than I did anywhere else I've ever caoched. Now, they are grown women who are professionals in some other field and they can sniff out a BS artist just as well as any other adult who has moved up in life, so you won't get respect if you have no clue. But, if you know what you're talking about and can get it across, this is a fun experience.

I have heard that womens' football leagues are increasing in numbers, but I'd like to know how prevalent are they around the country? You hear of the girls in HS football from time to time, some of which end up being very successful. I know the west coast is starting to have HS girls flag football in some high schools over the last handful of years...but how many pro/semi-pro womens' leagues are there out there?

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
We play in the IWFL (www.iwflsports.com). If my memory serves me, we have 45 teams across the US. There is another active large league the NWFA, both these leagues play in the spring. In previous years we played in WPFL which sadly seems to be closing. The WPFL started in the late 90's and had quite a few teams. I believe there are a few other leagues out there but are more regional.
Thank you for the positive words about women's football and the athletes that play the game. It has been an experience to learn this game. I played college level softball and I can tell you it is amazing to learn again. I now know why so many men love this game. The feeling of going into a game, giving everything you physically can and coming out on the other side is just mind blowing. This game tests who you are at the core and teaches you about yourself. Thank you to all of you have put in hours, days, months, and years of your lives to this game because I am able to learn from that. I also have to tell you that it was amazing to hear my 15 year old son yell "that's my mom" when I had my first tackle. We now share the love of this game and he is proud of they way I play it.
