Looking for opinions on the best stance and footwork (first, second steps) on slanting from a head up position (Example: both DTs head up on OGs). Need to know how to maximize our speed into a gap off the ball. Thanks!

Good Topic. I have pondered this question myself and have gone back and forth over the years. We also will slant from a head up positon. I know some of the true 5-2 slant people will back off the ball to execute a slant. I have seen some 5-2 teams that are very successful with this. We are a 4-4 team and crowd the ball. We will always start with a 45 direction step with the slant direction foot, follow up with short steps to maintain a base. Our aim point in the past was to square in the gap, penetrate the gap if possible, but play gap control. We changed up this year and our aim point is now the next O linemen and we attack his sternum shoulder the same as if we were not slanting. He will be our visual key and we will read him the same as if we were not slanting. The linemen we lined head up on will be our pressure key. We drill this with 2 on 1 reads.
