I have seen more and more of this from 3 and 4 man front teams. A DE in a 5 or 7 Tech, then works laterally back inside to cover A gap. Obviously you have to to blitz a backer to replace his gap. My question is: "What is the best way to teach the footwork, aimpoint or any other coaching points for this type of stunt technique?
I am not talking about a DT-DE twist. This is a stunt by a DE aligned in a 5 tech then he works laterally to cover Weak A gap. From a 4-4 the weak side tackle would slant back to Strong A, send the OLB into Weak B gap and scrape the weak inside linebacker for contain, play man in the secondary. I would think the DE footwork would be a direction step back inside working as laterally as possible and running an arc into A gap. I was wondering if anyone had used this stunt and had specific coaching points.
THAT IS A LOT OF GROUND TO COVER FROM A DE 5 TECH TO BACKSIDE A GAP ( I TAKE FOR GRANTED HE IS COMING FROM STRONG SIDE, RIGHT?) WHO IS RUNNING THIS STUNT?

If I have a DE that can do this well, I'd tell him to attack through the head of the near Guard through to the A Gap. As far as get-offs, assuming you want him to shoot right now, and not engage the OT, I'd teach it almost like a pull technique for an OL where we throw the pull-side elbow and work downhill toward the gap. If the G is not there, destroy the first thing that crosses your face and get to the ball. If the G down-blocks inside, the DE would have to adjust and come off his hip into B-gap--otherwise he's bowing around the G. You've got to have a player there who can make plays to run a slant two gaps over.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
We run a 4-4 defense and do a lot of blitzing. I am always looking for new blitz schemes. I have seen this sceme of a DE in a 5 tech to the weakside stunting to an A gap or a 7 tech to the strong side stunting to a B gap. I have never been able to pin down how to teach it. I know I want to give it a try this season. If it does not work out we will scrap it but I believe this could be a good scheme. The pull tech makes sense. Thanks for the suggestion. Any other suggestions on this or for that matter any blitzes from the 4-4 that have been good for you would be appreciated.
I'm not going to be much help, because as a DL coach, I was never comfortable having one of my guys stunt 2 gaps away from is alignment, but I did hear a coach speak at a Glazier clinic this winter on the 30 Stack and they had some blitzes that called for a 5 tech DE to "long stick" to the A-gap. He didn't go thru the teaching progression of this stunt because of time, but I talk with him pretty regular so I will ask him about it the next time I talk to him.
The best guess I have is instead of your aiming point being the near hip of the Guard, it would be the near hip of the Center and the step would be more of a falt step than a 45 degree step.
Putting the strong DT in a 3 tech invites an inside run game with the center firing into Mike. Blitz an OLB in C and pull the DE like a guard off the DTs hip.
The DE needs to jam his outside forearm to get leverage on a the OT firing off much like a pass rush. He also needs to pop his inside hip and get that inside foot down firm to hold his position on the OT initial explosion. Then the DE rides down the line behind his DT. My DTs jam and sit on the line so the Guard has no shot at the DE.
Does it work? Hell yeah! There is nothing like a back getting blindsided when he thinks he has daylight. All kinds of fun things happen... like fumbles or OOOOOOHHH and AHHHHH after the hit. I've also seen the DE plow the Lead FB closing the hole. T tries to bounce outside and finds the blitzing backer waiting.
