Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We are putting in the spread offense this year. Our first opponent plays mostly a straight 5-2(Dends on air, man to man in secondary). How do we block the inside and outside zone plays? Logic says to throw the ball.
It really depends on your formation. If you have a Tight End it is pretty easy to block inside zone against a 52. Outside Zone and Stretch will work well too if the back can make the SS miss.
Starting play side:
Z blocks the corner
TE blocks the DE
PST blocks the 5 Technique
PSG angle steps and beats the PSLB to the point of attack
C & BSG scoop the nose and BSLB
BST blocks the Tackle
H can run a backside bubble
X can run off the corner or block him if he sits
Everybody simply blocks the man facing him & IF you are covered by a LBer - you zone with your playside teammate. If you are covered by a DLM zone with your backside teammate (if both of you are covered by a DLM - MAN block),
How in the world are they going to defend a spread that employs real spread principles? I run a 3 x 2 spread and there is no way under the sun you are going to cover it from a 5-2!!! Spread from sideline to sideline, stay in the gun empty only and kill 'em! Easy as A-B-C.

Playside G and T zone to the backer, center stays BoB, backside G and T zone to the will backer. Depending on how they play you might want your backside tackle to cut and send your guard right up to the backer for the cutback. If the ends are tight it may be hard to find a seam without cutting back. We also had a tremendous amount of success pulling the tackle to kick out the end and just leaving the will backer alone. Not really a zone play, but it's tough to stop.
JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY, WHAT SPREAD FORMATION ARE YOU GOING TO BASE OUT OF? yOU ARE GOING TO USE MULTIPLE FORMATIONS OF SPREAD ALIGNMENTS, RIGHT? WHAT ARE YOU LEANING TOWARD? WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF THE SPREAD!!!

We are planning to primarily use multiple formations using 4 wide receivers (some trips or motioning to trips) No tight ends and 1 running back would be the most common formation.
I have used the 4 x 1 spread formation in the past, the best way to defeat a 5-2 is to throw. If you don't have a great qb, throw screens, bubbles, and tunnels to wr's; then throw bubble-wheels if they try to run man against you.
As for the running game vs. a 5-2, I always liked using my slot receiver to crack on the end or even the ILB on outside running plays. You can't run successfully inside against a 5-2 with a 4 x 1 offense; but outside is wide open!

Newt vs a spread and a 5-2 scheme the spread should remove at least one rush end which allows for the running game inside. I'm a spread formation offense that likes running at the 5-2 or 3-4 scheme because you can put a helmet on a helmet. Coach Campbell
It's EASY to run the zones vs. a 5-2. If they play MAN & the Safeties are over the TE(s) - it is IMPERATIVE that your WR's "earhole" the Safeties & let the Corners go!
Blocking RULES for zones (vs ALL defenses):
PROGRESSION FOR TEACHING INSIDE/OUTSIDE ZONES
1. TEACH BASE MAN BLOCKING # ASSIGNMENTS
A. CENTER BLOCKS #0 B. GUARDS BLOCK #1 C. TACKLES BLOCK #2 D. H & Y BLOCK #3 E. #4 ACCOUNTED FOR SEVERAL WAYS. F. NOTE: IF "0" IS NOT IN THE "CENTER BOX" — CENTER DESIGNATES "0" AS THE FIRST DEFENDER TO THE SIDE HE IS BLOCKING. G. IN A STACK — THE DLM GETS THE LOW #.
2. TEACH "COVERED/UNCOVERED" (TO DETERMINES WHO ZONE BLOCKS AND WHO MAN BLOCKS).
A. IF YOU ARE UNCOVERED — ZONE WITH YOUR PLAYSIDE TEAMMATE. B. IF YOU ARE COVERED — ZONE WITH YOUR BACKSIDE TEAMMATE (UNLESS HE IS COVERED THEN YOU MUST MAN BLOCK). NOTE: IF YOUR MAN IS STACKED IN A "TANDEM" — ZONE WITH TEAMMATE WHOSE MAN IS ALSO STACKED.
