Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
When having small , quick dl's, is it better to give them 1 gap responsibility and have them create havoc. I feel as though last year we played to much of a straight up 22 front and our dt's were put on skis backwards. What about stemming? How about shading your backside dt on the nose instead of inside shade of the guard?
It is like having a secondary player cover two zones or one, naturally the one zone assignment is going to be much simpler and easier to complete successfully. Shading the nose is always a good move, if nothing more than for the angle it forces the OL to block. Your questions indicate your thinking, keep them coming if we can help!

If you are going to have a 2 technique DL, either he has to be a stud or the LB behind him has to be a stud. Even with that, as the other coaches have said, they may be even more of a stud if they only have one gap to deal with. There times and schemes that make head up techniques an advantage, but as a rule, I think most HS coaches would agree that a one gap system usually makes good sense.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
I sure dont! As the first step is where we establish contact with the punch, and the second step is even more important to get down in order to maintain the all important BALANCE.

The only time I ever tell my DL to step into the gap first is if they are involved with a stunt of some sort. Other than that I want my DL to get thier hands on the OL, control him, shed and make a play. I've always felt that if my DL shoots a gap without a stunt coming, they are opening themselves up to blocking angles, trap blocks, etc. Yes, sometimes they guess right...then again sometimes they don't and they leave others hanging out to dry.

I want my DL to get their hands on the OL, we teach stab and grab to their gap responsibility. Stab the chest and grab the bicep. It seems to make the type of block you are getting easier to read and makes it tougher for the Ol to get to a backer. I try to never get a DL to play nose to nose w/ an OL. We may start head up, but on the snap we get to a gap. As a former OL, it is much easier to pass pro and run block someone who is playing down your pipe. We like to say stay on 1/3 of the man.
