Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I know that it's more than tendencies. What are some of the other things you defensive coaches look for when watching film? Short side protection? QB cadence? Hashes? QB feet? QB eyes - pre-snap ?
How many DIFFERENT FORMATIONS DO THEY RUN AND THROW OUT OF?
WHO is their OVERALL best player- WHAT is his NUMBER?
WHO is their best runner?
WHO is their best receiver?
EVALUATE THE QB!!! Can he really play or is he just an average type high school player?
Is he sharp in FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE, or can you easily befuddle him with
stemming, secondary roll coverages, etc? Does he have "tunnel vision" for
his favorite receiver or does he make his reads properly? Can he hurt you if he
breaks contain? Can he take a hit or is he easily intimidated? Does he panic in the
FACE OF A BLITZ?
What are their kick return formations, both kick off and punt returns? Best returner? His number?
These asre some of the additional things we always look for coach.

Ever get a great scouting report off film - kid looks like a real dud. You spend all week practicing against his weaknesses, then for whatever reason he plays like a stallion against you.
When we break down films, we are more concerned with what plays are run from each formation. We work on defending the 5 most frequently run formations and the five most frequently run run/passes. W feel that at the high school level, teams are very formation-oriented.
That is exactly how we coached defense for a whole lot of years, no doubt about it. But, when false keying became popular, we feel it is much more expedient to read keys than formations. Just our way.

One thing that I always look for in addition to what has been said is on their OL. Who is thier worst OL...that way I know which way they are less likely to run when it comes to 3rd and 2 in the 4th Q. Also, look to see if they are moving linemen around. We beat a team we had no business beating and wound up winning the conference a few years ago because the other team moved their best G around--he was the only one they pulled with. Our LB's had a great day! I've also been an assistant on a staff that moved thier best lineman around and ran behind him almost exclusively. You could tell the teams that recognized it and those who didn't.
One more thing I've picked up. I coach I admire greatly once told me--especially in high school--pay attention to the OC's throwing hand as much as the OB's. Don't think that just because a kid is a lefty that he will favor that side for throwing, rollouts, etc...chances are if the one calling the plays is right handed, the tendancy may go opposite. Just a thought.
