Has anyone here heard of or currently use the "CrossFit" program in their offseason strenght and conditioning? I have heard some really wonderful things about it, and would like to know if anyone has first hand experience to share before I jump head first into it.
We have been doing a lot of it for almost a year. The kids that have bought into it have made HUGE gains, it is just really difficult to convince a kid to go max effort and finish in 30 minutes unable to move when they are used to taking all day to finish a set of squats. We have kids that have added 50+ pounds to power clean and squat. These are kids who weigh less than 200 lbs themselves. Have you tried any of the workouts? We still do some traditional lifting just to keep the bench pressers happy, but as a coaching staff we have absolutely bought into it. It's especially great if you can't get kids into the weightroom for more than 30-40 mins at a time.
Thanks for your reply! Your testimonial sounds like a lot of others I have heard. Did you design your own WODs or did you just follow them online? Was it difficult to modify CrossFit to adapt to high school football? Do you think you could forgo traditional lifts altogether and just have the kids bang out a 20 minute workout or do you think core lifts are still an important part?
If you go to the website, search the message boards for black box method, we pretty much follow that. If you have an opportunity to take the kids to a nearby affiliate it will sell some of them that may be sceptical. The toughest thing about it is teaching them to work the right way. It is almost a special teams mentality. Go as hard and fast as you can, for a short time. Lots of kids don't know how to do that and are uncomfortable with it because it feels like crap while you are doing it. They want to take 5 minutes getting psyched and putting a bunch of weight on the bar and lifting it once and yelling etc. One of our WR's as a junior got on the field when we didn't have anyone left to put out there on a team that went 2-6, this year he led the section in receiving on a team that went 4-4 because he bought into it. We finished games in much better condition than most of our opponents.
