I love coaching - I hope to coach as long as I can. I love working with young people and young men. I respect the opinions on this board.
Head Coaches - who do you turn to when the going gets tough? Head Coaching has more challenges than anything I've done in the past 41 years. Everyday there seems to be a "major" decision. I sat in a meeting "program evaluation" with the administration and was told "we hired you to turn this program around." My first year here 1-8 previous 5 years (different coach & staff) 6-39. The administration has given me everything (new weight room = $100,000; new film equipment = $10,000; hired all 4 of "my guys" etc) they are "happy" with the way it's going (everything is slowly but surley starting to look like a "real high school football program"). I have mentors & guys I talk to - but not day to day. I'm not depressed or anything like that - My priorities are Faith,Family & Football in that order. I am in a great place spiritually and my family, I have a great job and things are looking good. Just interested to see who other HC's turn to for day to day stuff.
Even the good Lord Jesus had an inner circle that were his confidants, more so than the other 9 disciples.
All head coaches that I know of, always have one or two assistant's that they count heavily upon, more so than the other guys. My suggestion is that you do the same. It sounds to me like you have a great administration behind you and that in it'self in this day and time is worth a million dollars in my book.
Rome wasn't built in a day and neither is a successful football program, although it sounds to me like you are making good progress. Take a pointer from an old war horse; Don't take yourself so seriously. Learn to back off and quit pushing quite so hard. When things don't seem to be going your way, get with the guys you really trust on staff and vent a little. If you enjoy a beer or two, go to your favorite place and just kick the situation around with your assistant's. I never was a drinker but watched other coaches lose their futures because town folks perceived them to be drinkers. From then on I always recommended that you and your guys go out of town where waggling tounges can't hurt you and just kick back and relax. If your wife is suppportive, take her out for a nice dinner and leave the kids at home with a baby sitter if they are young. In other words, coach, just put it down for awhile and get away from the stress. You will be surprised just how invigorated you will be the next day and ready to get right back after it. Take it from a guy who spent 42 years on the field.

You need to push your OWN starter button. Tought times don't last - tough people DO!
Always remember (in coaching): You didn't exactly "sign on" for a "bed of roses"! It's a tough darned profession (if it WASN'T - hundreds of people would be lined up waiting for your job at half what they pay you)!
HANG TOUGH (& best wishes)!

I'm sure Tiger-1 (Jerry) would talk with you as well. We have both been thru all this ourselves before!

I am a young coach, 4 years total experience, and I am just amazed at the wisdom that can be gained through just listening to other people's problems. For the longest, I thought that I was the only one that had these type problems. I would just keep it all to myself and stay bottled up with the pressures to succeed. I didn't walk into the best situation, we are in the midst of a terrible turnaround, Supt, is nonrenewing the principal that hired me and he has it out in the community that they want another guy for the job. I have brought this program more than it has ever experienced, i.e. first winning season in 5 years, best record in 5 years, first postseason play in 5 years, more athletes to receive scholarships in two seasons than the previous 10 years, etc... I don't know what they expect of me. I find myself in a position where I don't really know what to do. My players come and ask me daily what is going to happen next and my response is, " I don't know, but for the time that I am here, I will give you all that I have." I hate the situation, but I know that it comes with the profession. I just don't remember my high school and college coaches ever having that worried look.
I know that this is not a venting spot or anything, but I just wanted to get those things off my chest and share them with some that have been in the business far longer than I have.
KR7263, you are in a situation that on the outside looks as if it is a dream. They are feeding your needs to physically turn the program around. My faith and a wife that listens to me go through my thoughts are all that I have. I have friends that coach other sports in other places, but they have never had to experience what I am dealing with now. Your faith will carry you, as mine has me, to great things. I know in my heart that GOD put us here for a reason and I am more than willing to accept the challenge.
Your declaration of faith is very refreshing and it is sincere from the heart. Good for you. Some think that Christians are weak. I always liked to show them that we are not all weak. Bill hit it on the head when he said that you have to be TOUGH AND WORK YOUR WAY THROUGH THESE ROUGH SPOTS. SOME AMONG US RESPOND ONLY TO SHOWS OF STRENGTH AND YOU MUST BE UP TO THE CHALLENGE. SHOW THEM THAT YOU ARE NOT A WEAKLING BY WORKING YOUR WAY THROUGH THE TOUGH SPOTS!!! Let them see Christ like traits in all that you do, but be tough while doing it! Saul slew his thousands, but David slew his ten thousands. That takes a man, Jack! Not a weakling.

I really enjoy having a dog. It is always happy to see me and seems to know when I'm the most upset.
Like the other coaches have mentioned, try to find an assistant you can vent with. Also a head coach from a different sport can understand a lot. Especially if they are supportive of the program.
Excellent Choice.
