Does anyone make a guide or have a handout they give to their players for dealing with the media? For years I have not allowed my players to talk to the media because I have always thought it takes away from the true team aspect of the game. I also didn't want them to say anything they would regret or would be locker room material for an opponent.
I am changing my my mind this year for many reasons but I want to give the players something to help themselves prep for the interviews. Any suggestions?
Excellent Choice.

My advice is to only allow your seniors to talk, and have a discussion with them before they do. I would want to have my most mature, well spoken kids out there. They may still slip up, but I feel it will be somewhat less likely. Still, make sure you let them know what you are expecting from them. We had a new school open in our conference several years ago. They had a pretty hot-headed coach. He obviously rubbed off on his players. There were a couple of instances where he had players spouting off to the news media how they were going to cruise through the conference. It really did provide locker room bulletin board material. There was a big bullseye put on that team and those players all year. That taught me that not only is media etiquette necessary to keep egg off your face as a program, but it is also a need for player safety. If you are in an area where all your teams know each other well, kids will start to focus on someone, and they will tee off on them.

Dealing with the media, be it television, newspaper, is an art form to say the least. On the HS level, it generally isn't too bad, but it can be! First off, everyone has to understand the media's job is to sell what ever media they represent, first and foremost! They most often do this by dealing in SENSATIONALISM, PURE AND SIMPLE. Be prepared to have your least innocuous statement turned, burned, and flat out lied about! They will blow the slightest thing completely out of preportion!!! They will put words in your mouth, or at least try to, to give a statement a completly different meaning than what you intended.
Other than an understanding with the media that you be permitted to be right there with the player being interviewed to correct any slip ups on his part that would be injurious to your team, I WOULD NEVER ALLOW ANY PLAYER, ESPECIALLY ON THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL OF COMPETITION, TO BE INTERVIEWED.
Let the colleges and pros deal with that. In 1994 when we made our successful run to the AFL Super Bowl Championship, on the professional minor league level, I could not believe the stuff that was being printed and spoken by the various media outlets.
At any rate, say as little as possible when interviewed. DO NOT GET DRAWN INTO ANY CONVERSATION ON TOPICS THAT CAN BE MISCONTRUED BY WHAT YOU SAY. BE WITH ANY PLAYER ABOUT TO BE INTERVIEWED!!! After a few years experience in dealing with the media, I'm sure you will see more clearly my point of view.

Coach,
I completely agree with you. Maybe I should stick to my long standing policy about not letting the HS kids speak with them. I always tell our team and our parents at our parent meeting to never believe anything I am quoted as saying unless they hear it directly. I tell them they print what they want regardless of what I say. They also know that I never speak about a specific player.
We had a girls volleyball player quoted two years ago as saying "We work real hard and blah, blah, blah." I couldn't believe they put it in the paper.
I'm glad to hear others that agree with me because I am constantly told by the media that I am difficult to work with.
Excellent Choice.

difficult to work with...boring...Funny, in this basketball season, I hear the same things said about the Supr's head coach. It seems to have worked for him.

I THINK THAT STICKING WITH THE PLAN YOU HAVE HAD ALL ALONG IS THE BEST COURSE TO FOLLOW!!!
I once had an article writtten about how I had made the statement that " I do not listen to many people when it comes to building a game plan, or basically inferred that I was beyond listening to anyone whom I did not agree with". Well, in all honesty, that is a true statement for the most part. But, to think that I was dumb enough to ever come out publically and say that was preposterous. hehehe
