Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
How would you defend a team that uses the shotgun, often lining up with 4 and sometimes 5 wr. When lining up in the 4 wide set, they run triple option and a trap. Also they pass very well with reading where the blitz is coming from as well as safety movement to help determine what coverage we are using.
I'm sure Tiger One will put in his words on this, and he's more of an expert on the spreads than I am, but my philosophy on spreads is to play alot of tough man or man free coverage and send at least 4 (assuming you're in the 33) and often 5--6 once in a while. You have to put pressure on the offense. Now, if you are going up against an offense where the QB is very good at seeing the blitz and checking into other plays, it obviously becomes much harder. I guess my best plan is to keep things relatively simple. Study film like crazy to find their tendancies, line up, get after them, and may the best man win.
One thing we liked to do against a team that ran primarily shotgun w/ 4 wide, we blized our Rob and Lou alot around the Tackles and had our Mike spy the running back. Luckily for us, we didn't have to worry about the QB running too much. He was a prototypical passer.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
Having run the 3 x 2 spread for 20 plus years now, it is without doubt, IMO, that man to man (bump and run) is the most effective way to defend bar none!!! It may just be my opinion, but I do feel qualified in making it. Zone coverages are just too easy to beat, I don't care what zone you favor. Most expect a full blitz when in an empty nest and it is good business to have a plan for that! Personally, we play man almost exclusively but do not blitz very much at all. Our philosophy hinges on the fact that we let the QB make his throw, but if he has nobody to throw it to, the play will fail. THE GREAT THING ABOUT BUMP AND RUN IS THE SIMPLE FACT THAT IT IS NOT TURN AND RUN WITH THE RECEIVER, WHEREBY YOUR GOING TO LOSE THOSE MATCHUPS QUITE OFTEN, BUT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS DESTROY THE TIMING OF THE PASS BY ROLLING UP HARD WITH INSIDE LEVERAGE AND JAM THE RECEIVER WHEN YOU PLAY
B & R. TO MAKE THE QB TO FACE THE NECCESITY OF GETTING OFF THAT RECEIVER AND START HIS READ PROGRESSION OF THE REMAINING RECEIVERS.

Tigerone,
With playing man to man how should I defend the option then. I was thinking stay in a cover 2 defense with the line slanting to the wide side of the field. I do have athletic sateties that can make plays if they decide to try and run a play action pass. With running the 3-5-3 slanting the line to the wide side(due to teams not wanting to option into the sideline) as well as maybe sliding the LB's over a few steps in a cover 2 to defend any pass under as well as the option play. With the 3-5-3 I have athletes that can run and make plays. Is this a better option than playing man coverage? (It's an Urban Meyer(Florida) type of offense with the speed an QB ability to defend)
In my opinion there is no better defense going than the man to man I have covered. But, you have to go with what you know and feel comfortable coaching, that's what I always did.

You can definately play man to man vs. the option. All you have to do is make sure the man that is responsible for pitch cannot be ran off. Some of the Greatest option defenses ever invented were by the University of Notre Dame staff In the Era of Ara. There Okie Dog pinch and Backbone defense both stuffed the Wishbone and the Houston Veer, Using man to man defensive principles.
