Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
6'0 175 will be a jr - finish top 20 in state T&F, ran the 400 (best time 48.7) & was on the state championship 4x400. We run double slot gun - Inside veer / mid-line / load opt / jet & rocket. We have a solid pounder type FB 6'0 220 & 2 good split ends both 6'3 both starter last year. I'd like to get this kid the ball on jet & rocket ok but he's kind of slight (I don't know if he's ready for varsity as a blocker etc.) We play in the large class & a brutal conference - 3 state champs & runner up last 5 years. As a frosh he played TB - As a soph/jv he got moved around a lot. Just looking for ideas.
BTW - He's a hitter on D - as a soph he played SS and is not afraid to hit.
DOES HE HAVE ANY ABILITY AT THE QB POSITION? I WOULD ALSO BE LOOKING AT HIM AS A FS ON DEFENSE, PROVIDED HE CAN HIT. YOU SAY HE IS SLIGHTLY BUILT, REMEMBER HE IS JUST A PUP AND TIME IN THE WEIGHT ROOM WILL MAKE HIM A BIG DOG! IF HE PUTS ON SOME WEIGHT (MUSCLE, NOT FAT) I WOULD LOOK AT HIM AT THE SS POSITION ALSO. PERHAPS EVEN A SAM OR WILL BACKER IF HE GET'S PHYSICAL, AS HE SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO MOVE LATERALLY AS YOU DESCRIBE HIM.

If not at QB as Coach Easton suggests, I would use him as the boundary side slot so he is always a threat to hit wide on jet, rocket or as the pitch man on option. If they overload the field side, you should get good numbers/match-ups to the boundary side and be able to throw it to him and/or beat them up with your good FB into the boundary setting up counter to your best athlete back to the field.
What defense do you run?

We run an odd stack - multiple - Coach Easton and others - The kid has never played QB ( I believe he could do it but we would have to start from scratch) is this advisable as we are totally committed to the triple option? Would love to put him there but 1. we have a returning starter 2. he would beat that kid out but how much time would he need to invest to be ready in relation to getting a team prepared?
IF HE IS THE ATHLETE YOU HAVE DESCRIBED, YOU HAVE THE WHOLE SUMMER TO GET HIM READY. WHAT OFFENSE DO YOU RUN? CAN HE THROW? HE HAS ESTABLISHED HIS RUNNING ABILITY. NO, I DO NOT BELIEVE IN TAKING A RAW KID AND PLAYING HIM AT QB, BUT WITH 3 MONTHS OF SUMMER WORK EACH DAY COUPLED WITH THE FACT YOU THINK HE CAN BEAT THE OTHER KID OUT, I WOULD GO FOR IT!!!

SORRY FOR OVERLOOKING WHERE YOU SAID YOU RUN THE TRIPLE. MY PREREQUISITE WHEN I RAN THE TRIPLE OUT OF THE BONE FOR YEARS, WAS TO GO WITH THE BOY WHO COULD READ IT THE BEST, NOT NECESSAIRLY THE BEST ATHLETE, FASTEST, ETC. IT IS THE READ THAT MAKES IT GO OR FLOP!!!

I agree with Coach Easton that the QB in the triple needs to be smart and able to make the reads above anything else. I would say if he's a great athlete and he's a hitter on defense then his build won't be a problem. Put him in that slot position and get him the ball however you like from there if you don't think you can turn him into a QB in time for the season. However, if you have an eye for putting him there after your returner graduates, start prepping him now, get him some reps and then use him as a situational guy or in packages for one series per half or something like that. If it looks like he's picking it up over the summer faster than you thought he would, make plans for the switch.

This will be my 2nd year at this school. I had no input his frosh year and I didn't know much about him last year. Great ideas - he will definitly play some QB this summer! I don't know if he will start as a jr on the varsity defense - time will tell. I've been around long enough (19yrs coaching) to never count on a jr prospect until I've seen him in a live varsity scrimmage.
You got it coach!!! Put him in that first scrimmage and rattle his cage good! Make sure the first team D is told to really get after his butt. Make certain he is hit on every play and especially when he is carrying out his fakes!!! You must be really tought to succeed at the QB position.
