Hi,
I am currently looking to get into coaching a football team in the future. I have loved football for a long time and need some tips of how to start my coaching career if possible. Some problems with me starting my new adventure is getting started in the right direction. I have no playing and coaching experience in football. Just backyard football that I played all the time and I watch it all the time college pro and high school. I just love football and would like to coach. Growing up, my school had no football program, now the county schools around it are getting football programs. I am out of school now. If anyone could suggest anything, please do on how I could get started.
Thanks,
Andrew
There's no real magic recipe to becoming a coach. If you are truly interested, simply get involved. With no experience, you may or may not be able to get a paid position right away, but vew coaches will deny someone who wants to volunteer. If you can't get a paid position, I will virtually guarantee that a coach will welcome you in as a volunteer as long as you are reliable and willing to learn. Just get your foot in the door...move along from there.

Andrew I start my 37th year as a coach and started off coaching at the youth level when I was playing in college. Visit with your local youth program and suggest that you visit your local head high school coach and share with him what you would like to do and have him make a few suggestions as well who knows he might take you into his program. Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes. Coach Campbell
My first coaching job in football was as the head coach of a Junior High level program. It was 1964. I wanted to move up to the high school level and did the next season as a QB coach. After working through the ranks of being a QB coach, and OC, and head coach I will tell you exactly what coach Campbell did, MAKE IT KNOWN THAT YOU WANT TO COACH. If we all had a dollar for every hour we served as "volunteers" we would be wealthy men! Learn all you can under the leadership of a well established head coach who is A WINNER, PUT YOUR TIME IN AND ONE DAY YOU WILL GET THE CHANCE TO MAKE YOUR DREAM OF BEING A HEAD COACH COME TRUE.

Volunteer yourself, but make sure that the timing is right and that the coach respects your schedule or things could get ugly. When you get tired and feel like quitting work harder and things will get better.
Never five QBs, RBs, TEs, WRs, on the field every play, OFFENSIVE LINEMAN RULE.
This is what I did. I had no playing or coaching experience before this. I contacted the local pop warner through an email to see if I could volunteer my time. I received a response back within a couple days. They said they could use some help with a new travailing midget division I talked with a guy off and on for two weeks and he told me to come to a meeting. The day before the meeting he told me he never told the Head Coach about me they filled the position. I also contacted the Head Coach at a local High School. Told him the same thing. About 2 mos after that I got a call from the new Head Coach at the middle school that feeds into the school I contacted. Last season was my first year as a 8th grade asst, Varsity scout. I started out as a volunteer, but when the Varsity HC realized I was not getting paid and another guy that was never there was I ended up getting paid. Now I am working with the freshmen through the summer and 8th grade when they start. When you get your foot in the door work your but off and good things will happen. I was always the first on at practice and the last to leave. I put in the extra effort. Not because I wanted to kiss some ass, but I love football and if I am doing anything that has anything to do with football I am one of the hardest working guys around. I am really lazy when it has nothing to do with football. Good Luck
I disagree with Coach Dan when he says to make sure the HC is aware of your schedule or it can get bad.
If you are SERIOUS about becoming a career football coach, your schedule should be built around the team schedule, not vice-versa. Being a volunteer makes no difference in my opinion. If your a volunteer who just wants to help out occasionally, tha't perfectly fine to build it around your schedule. But, if your SERIOUS about a coaching career, then it is not. THE HEAD COACH WILL COME TO DEPEND ON YOU AND IS ENTITLED TO KNOW THAT HE HAS A LOYAL, HARD WORKING ASSISTANT AND BEING PAID OR NOT, YOU ARE TO BE COUNTED ON. IF HE IS A GOOD HC, HE WILL MAKE SURE THE NEXT YEAR YOU WILL BE COMPENSATED. As a long time HC, I have had many volunteer type coaches who fully understood my expectations of them, and what they could expect from me. The problem with most volunteers in this day and time is the wives. If you don't have a suportive wife, forget it!!!

For someone to depend on you they must know what is going on, you don't want to say you can do whatever and then when it comes down to it you wind up slacking because of financial commitments. Then things get bad.
Never five QBs, RBs, TEs, WRs, on the field every play, OFFENSIVE LINEMAN RULE.
That is why I said exactly what I said. YOU DON'T MAKE A TOTAL COMMITMENT TO A HC WITHOUT FIRST CONSIDERING BEING ABLE TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE ENTIRE SEASON. IF NOT GETTING PAID AT FIRST WILL WORK A HARDSHIP, THEN DO NOT DO IT!!! ALL THAT DOES IS MESS THE STAFF UP.
AFTER 42 YEARS ON THE FIELD AS A COACH, I FEEL QUALIFIED TO HAVE MADE THAT STATEMENT.

DIDN'T MEAN TO COME ON SO STRONG, THAT IS THE TROUBLE WITH THE WRITTEN WORD. I certainly hope I did not offend you and if I did, please forgive me. I am enjoying the discourse and hope you will continue to contribute to the discussions as we go along.

No problem my father is a coach so I taken a few words before. I'm still posting. I'm actually in the phase of trying to get old VHS film unto DVDs, It is a little tougher than I thought it was going to be.

I ONCE COACHED IN A CITY THAT HAD A COMMERCIAL PLACE THAT DOING THAT WAS THEIR BUSINESS. IT WAS PRETTY EXPENSIVE THEN, BUT WITH ALL THE MODERN TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE TODAY YOU MAY FIND IT CHEAPER AND A LOT LESS TIME CONSUMMING TO HAVE SOMEONE DO IT FOR YOU. JUST A THOUGHT AS ALWAYS.
