The head coach of our program is a fine Christian man. One in whom I have great respect. I feel very loyal to him but am troubled by some of his recent decisions. I will never question his strategy, game tactics, etc. However, last season he let 25 kids come onto the football team who did not start out with us the week before we played our 6th game due to numbers being low and trying to have a JV schedule. Every assistant was asked what they thought before the decision was made and every one said they were opposed to it. In two or three cases last season some kids direspected an assistant in front of the entire team and were not disciplined for their actions. He simply stays away from addressing discipline issues all together. He insists on keeping kids around who are clearly a distraction to the team. We started with eight coaches last year and we are down to four and possibly three, including the OC resigning for the reasons above and more. There is very little dialogue among the staff and no clear mission or purpose for what we are doing. It seems that fundamentals, hard work, and discipline are no longer important. The school is apathetic and now the football program is as well. I really feel he is conflicted between two different goals: 1. Winning football games 2. Saving problem kids from the streets. I have talked to him to let him no how I feel about things. Everything is out in the open with us which is good, but nothing has changed. We had a losing season last year with pretty good talent (many close losses). Things simply seem to be going further down the same path. I am very torn between my love for the game of football and my loyalty to the head coach. Any suggestions or advise is greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind that this person is like a family member to me when responding, but I really do need some sound advise on this. I need an unemotional perspective from other coaches. Thanks.
