Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coach your QB's to run the path of: to the hash marks, to the numbers, to the alley up the side lines when running the veer AND KEEPING THE FOOTBALL. That way he is running a true veer angle, plus the fact he pretty much insures a one on one tackling situation with a CB verses heading into the heart of the defense where he may end up in a body cast and standing on the sidelines with you for the rest of the season! Now, don't misunderstand what I am saying here. HE MUST BE PHYSICAL, TOUGH, AND ABLE TO TAKE A HIT. My point being why subject him to UNNECESSARY HITS?

Coach they are helping myself but I can see how they could be getting to you about writing this every day.
With the season comming around for myself I have alot on the plate right now. I would gather it's the same for most, as yourself ... Maybe not every day, so one can take -in, chew , taste , digest , and take a breath... Just my penny worth... YOUR ALL GO COACH !!! BEST as always
It is no problem for me, just was wondering if anyone is actually reading them. I don't mind doing it at all. I'll take a break for a week or so and wait to hear if the coaches want me to continue or not. If I don't hear from them, I will just drop it and we will discuss other things. Thanks for your input.

MECHANICS OF THE THUMB DOWN PITCH FOR OPTION QB'S.
Incorporate in your individual QB drill periods the PROPER MECHANICS of making this style pitch.
Teach him to DROP his hips (insures a good power base to pitch from) STEP toward his target while EXTENDING pitching arm toward his target. RELEASE the ball by TURNING THE THUMB DOWN and giving it an end over end ride upward to where it can EASILY BE SEEN and handled, by the pitch back.
GOOD DRILL:
Have 2 QB's with 7 yd split between them, jog across the field width, making pitches to each other every sevral yards. Be sure and emphasize the good mechanics outlined above and make sure they pitch with one hand going one way and the pther hand coming back. ALWAYS HAVE A RIGHT HANDED QB MAKE SEVERAL MORE PITCHES EACH DAY WITH HIS LEFT HAND.

Coach your QB's to ALWAYS stay with a tagged receiver as long as is possible before going to another receiver. The reason we do this is simply because the tagged receiver has been chosen to run a specific route that will help us by the assistants in the box or on the sidelines who have seen something that should net us a nice gain on the play, PROVIDED THE QB CAN GET HIM THE BALL.

One facet of the passing game that will need your attention is your ability to stretch the defense both horizontally and vertically. We do this in both the pre snap look and the post snap. We use MOTION to establish a HORIZONTAL stretch in the PSL verses man schemes and ALIGNMENT verses zone schemes.
IN MY 3 X 2 we will align from sideline to sideline (to the 7 yd alley on each side within which to operate)
with the ball in the MOF. Check previous post above to see how we align. If you are looking at man coverage, they have no alternative but to go with you and if they stay with zone it is simple to pick them apart with a good QB!!! On the snap, our patterns call for a verical stretch by certain of the 5 receivers and horizontal routes by specific receivers. With a little imagination, you can have the defense running around like a chicken with it's head cut off by making large holes in a zone or forcing one on one situations across the board by man schemes. This prevents loading of the box against you and pits your best against their best who has little or no help from his team mates.

MAKING YOUR QB PROFICIENT AT MAKING ALL THE THROWS
It is imperative, when training a young QB, that he must be coached to make all the basic throws. These are the routes you must always include:
1. OUT CUT 10. DIG
2. REGULAR SLANT 11. SQUARE IN
3. QUICK SLANT 12. WHIP
4. CURL
5. POST
6. POST CORNER
7. GO
8. FADE
9. STOP
Each route has it's own "mechanics" that must be employed when throwing the ball with accuracy. The placement of the ball always is based on where is the defender set up against your receiver. For example if the DB is set up on your receivers INSIDE, the ball will be thrown over the OUTSIDE shoulder of the receiver. On an inside route we throw the ball at belt level and not higher to avoid a carom off the hands and ends up being an interception. On a 3 step drop route, such as an out cut, the QB is coached to take three short choppy steps and fire. On a 3 step drop inbreaking route, he is coached to take 3 regular steps to allow for the play to develope. It is these kind of things that a real QB coach knows and insists that his proteges learn them from the git go.

RUNNING THE "HURRY UP" OR "2 MINUTE DRILL" OFFENSE
Your QB must understand the absolute necessity for his being responsible for the success of the hurry up.
By his actions, he must display a sense of URGENCY to his team mates to get back to the LOS and get the next play off!!! Now, understand me, there is a BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING HURRIED AND BEING QUICK. He must be QUICK, not HURRIED! HURRIED WILL FORCE MISTAKES THAT CAN COST YOU THE GAME IN CRITICAL SITUATIONS WHILE QUICK WILL GO A LONG WAY IN MAKING YOU A WINNER. Coach him up in the fine art of knowing the difference!!!

There are 3 things that make your QB a passer more than anything else.
1. GOOD MECHANICS- THROW THE BALL THE SAME WAY EVERY TIME!
2. TIMING- THROW THE BALL ON TIME!
3. ACCURACY- MAKE THE BALL GO WHERE HE WANTS IT TO GO!
Don't waste time trying to make a passer out of a youngster who cannot throw the ball NATURALLY. The famous NFL QB Y.A.Tittle once said in his Alabama drawl; "either you can pass or you cain't" and that really sums it up in a nut shell. Throwing the ball just comes naturally to some, but not to others, as you well know I'm sure.
The 3 criteria mentioned above are the crux of a QB's training throughout his career, get him started right.

great stuff Tiger.nice how even though you sound like you've become a 3X2 pass happy guy that you include just as many tips on option for us option guys.you seem very keen and smart on the option stuff. what made you switch so dramitically or do you still throw some option stuff in there?
WILL ALWAYS LOVE OPTION FOOTBALL AND WILL ALWAYS HAVE IT AS A PART OF MY OFFENSE. I have been coaching the 3 x 2 spread for over 20 years now, long before spread football of any kind got popular, but always have an option package READY TO GO IN EVERY GAME PLAN.
We once went 33-3 running the triple out of the bone in Florida's highest high school classification. We were strictly ISV/OSV and have some 14 players in the NFL from those teams. Glad you are enjoying the option QB tips as I'm trying to help everyone.

Hi Coach
Just found out that the team that I'm helping out with is big on the option. I'll be re-reading your stuff...
Your tips are greatttt but the QB stuff is priceless ... BEST COACH
Today I want to talk about helping your QB get started right on how to read the defense to make your passing game successful.
Let's list the basics first in order to build a solid foundation as we go along on this topic:
1. Immediately after breaking the huddle and approaching the LOS, locate the FS.
2. Locate the SS.
3. Locate the Mike LB.
* These 3 player's will tell you in the PSL what you need to know, and if they stay with what they are showing you in the PSL, what you can expect after the snap.
4. Most often, we read from top to bottom and from the inside out, or outside in depending upon the pattern your receivers are running.
5. Do not look short and then look long. Your eyes focus better looking long and then short. That is why we read from top to bottom.
6. When reading ZONE coverages, we read the defender and not the receiver, as he will give away the void in his coverage area by his own movement. The void in the zone is where the receiver will be trying to reach and he will expect the ball to be there when he arrives. To simplify, coach your QB to throw to the area the DEFENDER IS COMING FROM, NOT WHERE HE IS HEADED.
7. IT IS ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE THAT YOUR QB BE COACHED TO KNOW WHERE HIS RECEIVER'S WILL BE AT ALL TIMES IN THEIR ROUTES AND ABOVE ALL ELSE, TO KNOW WHERE THE ROUTE IS TO FINISH AND THE CATCH TO BE MADE. WE WILL CONTINUE WITH MORE TOMORROW.

HOW TO DISCERN IF COVERAGE IS MAN OR ZONE IN THE PSL
Alignment and motion are the tried and true methods for doing this. If the CB's are rolled up on the wideouts with inside leverage, and looking only at the receiver, chances are pretty good they are in MAN coverage. If you send a man in motion, AND A DEFENDER GOES WITH HIM, here again this indicates man coverage scheme.
If the CB's are sitting off 5-7 yds on the outside shoulder of the X receiver and 7-9 yds on the outside shoulder of the split Y receiver, AND THEY ARE LOOKING AT THE QB, it is a good indicator of ZONE coverage.
But, in this day and time of DISGUISING THE DEFENSIVE LOOKS IN THE PSL, we have grown accustomed to using other methods. Remember yesterdays tip about reading the two safties and the Mike backer? This is what we do mainly today and place very little time paying attention to the CB's.
The alignment in the PSL of these 3 will alert us to know what is coming. Let's get to the mechancis of your QB's reading the defense: SCAN YOUR FORMATION FOR UNCOVERED RECEIVERS. IF YOU SEE SOME, LOOK FOR UNCOVERED CHECK. LOCATE THE FS (WEAK SAFETY) IN THE PSL. THE FS IS ALWAYS THE ONE ON THE LEFT HASH AS THE QB LOOKS DOWN FIELD. THE SS SAFETY IS ALWAYS ON THE RIGHT FROM A QB'S PERSPECTIVE, WHEN LOOKING AT A BASE COVER 2. IF THE FS IS LOW, CHECK OTHER KEYS FOR COVER 0. IF FS IS HIGH CHECK OTHER KEYS FOR COVER # 1 OR COVER # 3 ( THIS APPLIES WHEN ONLY ONE SAFETY IS DEEP). IF THERE ARE 2 SAFTIES AND THEY ARE BOTH LOW, CHECK OTHER KEYS FOR COVER 0. IF BOTH SAFTIES ARE HIGH, CHECK KEYS FOR COVER # 2, COVER # 2 MAN, OR COVER 4 (QUARTERS) IF THERE ARE TWO STAGGARD SAFTIES, (ONE HIGH, ONE LOW) CHECK KEYS FOR COVER # 1/ROBBER OR COVER # 3/ROBBER.
*** This reading systems works equally well from up under or in the gun***
That is enough for today. Digest it thoroughly and tomorrow we will get deeper into the mechcanics of reading the defense. We can't mature your QB with a weak foundation, he must KNOW this stuff and not guess.

DOES THE QB. MAKE THESE READ'S ON EVERY PLAY, EVEN RUNNING PLAYS MY THOUGHT AT THE FRESHMAN LEVEL AFTER HE GET'S A FEW OF THE RUNNING PLAYS UNDER HIS BELT TO INTRODUCE THIS TO HIM ... MY THOUGHT THEN IS TO HAVE HIM READ THE DEFENSE AS IF IT IS A PASS PLAY ... WHEN IN REALITY HE IS JUST DISHING THE BALL OFF ON A SIMPLE DIVE OR POWER ...
AS TO TEACHING THIS YOUNG QB. IS THERE LIST OF MUST DO AND AT WHAT POINT IF ANY DO WE DRAW THE LINE ...
THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION IS YES. BY READING AS I HAVE OUTLINED, THIS WILL LET HIM KNOW IF HE CAN BE EXPECTING A BLITZ OR WHATEVER ELSE CAN AFFECT THE RUNNING PLAY, AS WELL AS, THE PASS PLAY. THE DL ALIGNMENT IS NOT NEARLY AS IMPORTANT AS THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE SECONDARY, SAFTIES AND MIKE BACKER IN DERTERMING WHAT YOU MAY EXPECT ON THE SNAP.

BEING AWARE OF "DISGUISED" SECONDARY LOOKS (exerpt from my book )
Your QB must be well aware of disguised looks by the defense. If there is one safety and he rolls down hard on the snap, have a plan to handle the pressure that will be coming on the snap! If there are 2 safties and they both roll down hard on the snap, have that plan to handle pressure ready for sure! If the FS, or both safties keep their original alignment after the snap, then the QB must go through his read progression and he must know where the weaknesses are in the coverage defender we are attacking.
Coaching Point:
Make certain your QB really understands the last two tips! Give him a written quiz, as well as, stop him often in practice with "pop quizzes" just before the snap and ask him what is his plan for that play, what is he seeing?
Coach Easton-TIGER ONE
J.C. EASTON
HEAD COACH
GA TIGERS FOOTBALL
PROFESSIONAL MINOR LEAGUE
One of the most important areas to read, after the snap, is the MOF about 15-25 yds deep and about 2 yds inside each hash. THIS AREA IS CALLED THE SQUARE. To read this area becomes necessary when your QB is unable to determine the coverage in the PSL or to help him know if he has recognized the right coverage after the snap.
When reading the square, the QB keeps his head and eyes straight down the MOF and does not focus in on either safety, but rather sees them with his peripheral vision.
IF NEITHER SAFETY SHOWS UP IN THE SQUARE AND BOTH ARE DEEP, IT WILL INDICATE A FORM OF COVER # 2. QB THEN QUICKLY CHECKS THE CB'S AND PLAY WILL TELL HIM IF IT IS COVER #2 MAN OR COVER # ZONE. IF NEITHER SAFETY SHOWS UP IN THE SQUARE, AND BOTH ARE SHALLOW, MORE THAN LIKELY HERE COMES THE PRESSURE (BLITZ) AND YOU HAD BETTER HAVE THAT PLAN READY WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT ON HOW TO DEAL WITH IT.
IF THE SS SHOWS IN THE SQUARE THIS INDICATES COVER # 3 ROLLED WEAK, OR POSSIBLY COVER # 1. IF THE WEAK SAFETY (FS) SHOWS IN THE SQUARE, THIS INDICATES A STRONG SIDE COVERAGE AND CAN EITHER BE COVER # 3 OR COVER # 1. IF THE COVERAGE IS # 3, IT COULD BE A COVER # 3 SKY (SAFETY) OR COVER # 3 CLOUD DEPENDING ON WHO HAS THE SHORT ZONE RESPONSIBILITY.
IF EITHER SAFETY SHOWS UP IN THE SQUARE, THEN THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE THROW IS THE ONE MADE TO THE SIDE HE CAME FROM, IN OTHER WORDS AWAY FROM THE DEFENDER.
IF NEITHER SAFETY SHOWS IN THE SQUARE, THEN A SMART QB WILL ALWAYS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AN MOF OPEN ANY TIME HE CAN GET IT, AS IT THEN BECOMES A HIGH PERCENTAGE THROW.
*** COACH BILL MOUNTJOY, (ONE BACK HERE ON THE FORUM) AND I DISCUSSED THIS SYSTEM A FEW YEARS AGO NOW AND FOUND THAT IT IS ALMOST IDENTICAL TO WHAT WE BOTH HAVE TAUGHT FOR A LONG TIME . IN RELATIONSHIP TO HIS BEING A FINE OL COACH, HE IS ALSO AN EXCELLENT QB COACH AS WELL. ***
Tomorrow we will talk about counting defenders and giving your QB an excellent short cut that will save him valuable seconds in the PSL.
