Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We want to dispel some misconceptions that folks have about actually counting each defender in the box which is way to time consumming.
My good friend Bill Mountjoy, (ONE BACK HERE ON THE FORUM) does it like this and I do too. Bill, being a one back set man pretty much exclusively as he and Joe Gibbs are personal friends and Bill has coached Joe's philosophy since 1981 with great success, we will use his formation for this explanation.
Let's say we are in a one back set with 2 TE's and 2 WR's; We don't actually count the defenders but just look at the safteies. ONE SAFETY DEEP USUALLY INDICATES 8 IN THE BOX WHILE 2 SAFTIES DEEP USUALLY INDICATES 7 IN THE BOX. Now idf we are in a one back with 1 TE, 3 WR's we find this usually means 7 in the box and two safties deep usually means 6 in the box.
This method is very accurate and much more expedient for your QB to make his PSL reads.
Tomorrrow we will look at reading the DL.

Coach Easton,
Every QB coach, no matter what system they're coaching, should not only read your posts but should teach this information to their QB's. I know I will be. This is great stuff.
If the opponent offers a 3 man front (DL'S) it is some form of a 3-4 or a 3-3 (3-5) stack or 5-3. You can eliminate the 33 stack if they don't use it often in the game. YOU CAN TOTALLY ELIMINATE THE 5-3 IF THEY DON'T STACK ON THE CENTER REGULARLY.
If they have 4 DLM's, it is either a 4-3 or it could be a 4-4. Remember, a 4-3 under/shade looks almost identical to a 3-4 (5-2) with the nose shaded strong and kicked down (eagled down, reduced, etc.) on the weak side. It really amounts to a 52 eagle weak.
I'm giving you added information above so that you can teach it the right way. WHAT THEY REALLY NEED TO KNOW IS HOW MANY SAFTIE'S TO TELL YOU HOW MANY DEFENDER'S ARE IN THE BOX AND WHICH SIDE OF THE DEFENSE IS "WHITE" (LB defending the B gap) and which is RED ( B gap defended by a 3 tech DLM or a 4i DLM.

ADDITIONAL FRONT READING INFORMATION SUBMITTED BY COACH BILL MOUNTJOY AND HIS METHOD USING THE CENTER TO MAKE THE CALLS. WE COVER THE SAME THINGS BUT MY TACKLES MAKE THE CALL.
CENTER FRONT ID PROGRESSION OF THE 5 ID CALLS TO BE MADE:
Prior to each play, the center will make a front ID call. The C will will verbablly and visually signal the front to the offense. He will hold his hand up while approaching the LOS signaling weather it is 4 or 3 man down lineman front. He will then call out the front. Line calls will then be made after identifying the front by the Center.
# 1 = UNDER ( UNCOVERED GUARD TO THE STRENGTH SIDE)
# 2 = EVEN ( UNCOVERED CENTER)
# 3 = OVER ( UNCOVERED GUARD AWAY FROM STRENGTH)
# 4 = OKIE 3 MAN LINE = ( CENTER COVERED AND BOTH GUARDS UNCOVERED)
# 5 = JAM ( CENTER AND BOTH GUARDS COVERED)
# 5 BILL CALLS JAM, I HAVE ALWAYS CALLED "SOLID". I THINK THIS IS AN EXCELLENT AND EASY WAY FOR YOUR QB TO OPERATE IN THIS FACET OF THE GAME. THANKLS COACH FOR SUBMITTING THIS INFORMATION TO THE DISCUSSION.

The Successful QB candidate for the starting job will understand from the git go, what the QB coach and Head Coach expect from their starter. Below are some of mine that have served me well over the years.
1. MUST BE A WINNER ( A QB'S FIRST JOB, BAR NONE, IS TO WIN!)
2. MUST POSSESS CERTAIN PHYSICAL SKILLS NECESSARY TO RUN THE CHOSEN OFFENSE, BE IT OPTION OR SPREAD OR POWER, ETC.
3. MUST BE AN ACCOMPLISHED PASSER/RUNNER
4.MUST POSSESS ARM STRENGTH AND TOUCH TO MAKE ALL THE THROWS
5.MUST POSSESS THE LEADERSHIP QUALITIES RESPECTED BY TEAM AND STAFF
6.MUST POSSESS OUTSTANDING WORK ETHIC, SECOND TO NONE ON THE TEAM
7.MUST POSSESS FOOTBALL INTELLIGENCE
8.MUST BE EMOTIONALLY BALANCED, NEVER TOO HIGH OR TOO LOW, ALWAYS IN CONTROL
9.MUST BE THE TYPE OF PLAYER WHO CAN PERFORM UNDER HEAVY PRESSURE
THESE ARE A FEW OF THE ATTRIBUTES I ALWAYS LOOK FOR.

Q1. When teaching the 3 step drop, I've noticed that some coaches prefer the footwork to be different when a right hander is throwing to his left in order to turn his hips. What do you teach?
Q2. Does anyone still teach the backpedal when dropping back and what are the pros and cons? Dan Fouts and Johnny Unitas are 2 that I remember using it with great success.
The Northeast (Maine) can't say thanks enough for all your help and advice. Coach Mac
some people live on what they know, and some people live for what they don't
When throwing to the left, I always teach one deep step (never over shoulder width to maintain balance) while at the same time placing the QB's chin on his left shoulder as he completes his drop of two choppy steps, brakes and in one smooth motion rotates his hips ( like a well greased round table as Dan henning say's) and steps into the throw with his whole body and not just his arm. The play is such a "quick hitter" that not looking off the defender is spurrious to me and by having his eyes fixed on the receiver he does away with the necessity of his "head being on a swivel" as he locates the receiver. To me, this technique has long been the best.
Question # 2 :
The back pedal escape seems to have evolved with the rest of the game into a technique of the past.
I am 67 years old and remember the technique being used very successfully by many QB's. BALANCE WAS ALWAYS A POINT OF CONTENTION WITH THAT METHOD AS IT IS VERY EASY TO GET YOUR HEAD
OUT OF ALIGNMENT WITH THE REST OF THE BODY AND CAUSED MANY A BACKWARD FALL.

Unlike throwing to his left, I always teach that the QB should keep his head and eyes straight down the MOF until he is ready to brake his 3 step drop and make his throw to his right. We do this because there is usually an extra defender on the strong side and an INT is more likely, thus it become necessary to disguise our intentions better.
TIP # 38
QUICKEN THOSE FEET OPTION QB'S!!!
The successful option QB will work diligently to improve his quickness of feet!!! No better way to do this than to work the DOTS, THE JUMP ROPE, AND THE LADDER DRILLS. A serious athlete looking to excel in the option game will do these drills year ' round, before, during, and after the season!!!

Upper body strength is imperative for a QB. I always like to include the following lifts for mine:
1. bench press WE DO NOT WANT TO JUST MAINTAIN DURING THE SEASON,
WE WANT TO GET STRONGER EVERY DAY!!!
2. lat pull downs
3. tricep pull overs
special exercises:
dumbell butterflies (cutaways)
burn out for 1 minute on dip bar 3 times a week ( full extension as fast as you can go for full minute)
4 way neck machine regimen ( if machine not available use weight plate with bungee cord)
*** DON'T FORGET TO USE THE DOTS-JUMP ROPE-LADDER DRILLS FOR LOWER BODY DAYS ***

To get the QB's ready for a good practice day or game, we always go through some special stretches that are designed to improve the dexterity of the hands and throwing arm.
We START with finger stretches. This is accomplished by starting with the thumb of the left hand bending back the thumb of the right hand and holding it for a 10 count. Then the index finger , middle finger, ring finger and pinky of the left hand doing the same to the corresponding finger on the right hand. When all five digits of the right hand are completed, do the left hand.
SECOND STEP, we are going to have the kneeling QB extend his arms directly behind him as he bends slightly forward. His partner will grab his wrists and cross the left arm over the right arm for a 10 count, then the right arm over the left for a 10 count.
THIRD STEP, we are going to stretch the throwing arm in the following manner. Pair up 2 QB's, one kneels on his left knee and places his right arm from the shoulder to the elbow PERPENDICULAR to the ground at a 90 degree angle, from the elbow to the hand is raised in 90 degrees with palm facing outward. His partner now places his right hand on the kneeling QB's elbow and gently pushes forward while placing his other hand on the kneeling QB's palm and pulling gently backward until a maximum of pressure has been exerted and the kneeling QB will say- "that's far enough". The stretch is held for a 10 count.
Now, we invert the kneeling QB's arm and put pressure on it in exactly the opposite direction and hold it for a 10 count.
COACHING POINT- BE SURE AND HAVE THE QB BEING STRETCHED "SHAKE IT OUT" AT THE END OF EACH EXERCISE BY RAPIDLY SHAKING HIS ARMS WHILE THEY HANG LOOSELY AT HIS SIDES.

Is your QB the first one on the practice field and the last to leave? Is he hustling the whole practice? Is he showing leadership? Is he displaying talent? IS HE LEARNING THE entire offense? Be sure and give your # 2 QB lot's of work and make the # 1 guy EARN HIS STARTING JOB, DON'T JUST HAND IT TO HIM.
If any of the answers to the above is NO, then GAHA (Get After His A..)

The average football play lasts around 4 seconds. HAVE YOUR QB'S RUN IN BURSTS OF 4 SECONDS FULL OUT WITH 25 SECONDS IN BETWEEN BURSTS. RUN THESE IN THE FORM OF 10 YD GASSERS. WATCH THE CLOCK FOR EXACT TIME INCREMENTS AND RUN THESE AT THE END OF PRACTICE.

Today is my 48th wedding anniversary and I'm taking the day off. A coach's wife is a very special lady indeed, treat them like a thorobred and they won't turn into an old nag! After 4 kids, 8 grand kids and 48 years, I'm proud to say God gave me the finest filly He had to offer the day He sent my wife to me. I was a 19 year old sailor, doing my military stint in the Navy. My wife was 18 and working for Prudential Insurance. My twin brother had married her best friend when I was over seas and when I came home they introduced me to my wife and we were married 8 months later. We were married a year and a half before our first child came along and in the next 8 years God blessed us with two more daughter's and a son. My son became an athlete and played for Clemson University on a full ride football scholarship as a QB/Receiver. All of our children are married now with famlies of their own, but I am happy to say they all serve the Lord and we remain close knit. God has been very good, indeed, to us.

Congratulations on the anniversary. You've got to have a wonderful wife to put up with a football all these years. I know, I've got one that has been with me for 43 years.
THANKS BUDDY!!! YOUR NOT DOING BAD YOURSELF AT 43 YEARS!!! IF MY WIFE TREATED ME LIKE THESE TREAT THEIR MEN TODAY, I WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE IN 48 MINUTES, HOW ABOUT YOU???

Concentrate in practice on THE RIGHT ROUTES for that weeks game!
Coach, make sure your QB's and receiver's are concentrating PRIMARILY on the routes that that weeks game plan calls for. Set up every scenario the defense will show and rep the dickens out of the routes that will pay big dividends against that particular look! I often times shared here on the board how I heard Joe Montana say that he never felt comfortable throwing a route until he had repped it at least 2,500 times! Now coach, that is one heck of a lot of reps but it shows what it takes to be a great QB. DON'T WASTE MUCH TIME ON ROUTES YOU WILL NOT BE THROWING, BUT RATHER STRIVE TOWARD PERFECTION WITH THE ONES YOU WILL THROW MOST OFTEN. HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE PRACTICE TIME IS LIKE GOLD, VERY PRECIOUS, SO MAKE IT COUNT!!!

QB MUST KNOW WHERE RECEIVER WILL BE AT ALL TIMES IN HIS ROUTE
It is absolutely imperative to a successful passing attack that your QB's know where the receiver's are going to be EVERY SECOND during the course of the play. An example to drive this point home: let's say you have tagged the slot receiver with a two move route and lets say that route is a 12 yd square in to the MOF. I teach our QB's to always stay with the tagged route as long as is possible because we have spotted something from the box upstairs or the sidelines that will net us a big gain if we can get the receiver the ball. Knowing this, the QB still cannot allow himself the luxury of reading the one receiver the whole way in his route and must look off the defenders, then when he is ready to throw he must KNOW WHERE THE RECEIVER IS IN ORDER TO MAKE A SUCCESSFUL THROW. IF THE RECEIVER IS NOT WHERE HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE, THEN YOU CAN PRETTY MUCH KISS THAT PLAY GOOD BY. As soon as your receivers grasp this fact, then ROUTE DISCIPLINE TAKES ON A WHOLE NEW MEANING FOR THEM.
