Yes, I coach 7 & 8th grade and with many this is their first ever year of football. At this point in the year, we are doing conditioning and weights, but I would like to start getting some team building exercises going, especially for the ones who will be lineman and the ones just out to teach them how to work as one unit instead of an individual. I know the military uses logs and has them carry them back and fourth, but with kids this age that may be a little much. Any suggestions are welcome.
This may not be the answer you are seeking, but in my opinion, it is a very relistic solution to the problem you are trying to solve. In my mind, this becomes more of a mental thing than a physical one that can be solved by a few team exercises.
I believe the answer to building any SUCCESSFUL team, is to get the player's to GENUINELY care about each other. When the guy next to you in the backfield is willing and able to step up and block to help PROTECT his team mate, because he really does not want his buddy to get creamed, I believe is the day you see team building taking place. When a guard and a tackle perform a deuce block and the same effort is made by both to help the other man be successful, as well as, himself is a step in the team building process! When they fully grasp the fact that a solid TEAM EFFORT is comprised by 11 outstanding INDIVIDUAL efforts to beat the man over them more than he beats you, is when team unity starts to take place. They began to see if they don't do THEIR JOB, then TEAM SUFFERS AS A WHOLE.
TEAM DISCIPLINE, PROPER ATTITUDE, AND CARING ABOUT YOUR TEAM MATES IS WHAT REAL TEAM UNITY IS ALL ABOUT. After 42 years on the field as a coach, I never found a better way.
