Does anyone have any good drills they use to teach running back blocking?
I have drills I use w/ the sleds, 1 on 1 etc. but am always looking for new ideas to keep the kids interested.
Also what do you guys think is a good practice progression for Indy period? We usually go about 20min, (there never seems to be enough time) so I am looking for ways to use the time wisely.. I always try to use the first couple min to talk to them & to review the previous day, then get into working stance/steps for about 5 min, then work ball security, blocking, and do some footwork drills. We are a spreed team and run a lot of inside zone, so we really work on pressing the heels, being patient and finding that hole.
Thank you, and good luck to everyone this season!!!
Would recommend that you do your talking some place else besides the practice field. You mention you never have enough time, but you take 5 minutes to talk to your players. THE PRACTICE FIELD IS FOR REPS, COACH, NOT TALKING. Just a suggestion as always.

In Small Group work - when the QB is working the plays with the RB - the other RB's practice their blocks on the play being run vs. a defender with a dummy (stand up or shield) aligned on the play strip (hose, belt, etc.) where he would be on the opposing defense! Both runs AND passes (defender rushes with shield).
I should of worded my previous post better. We are a small team with a lot of two way guys, so practice is structured with D for the first half and O for the second. When we break out of D there is a 5 min break, to set up bags, cones etc. I use a few mins of that time to talk about & review the previous days plays, aiming points, formations, motions, set, etc.... And that's really only now during mini camp while we are installing, but also for a couple kids that have never played the position... I agree 20 min "indy" is good during the season, but during camp there seems like there's never enough time..
I was only asking for ideas on drills. I have quite a few, (and some I will use every day) but it is a long season and I am looking to change things up to keep the kids interested.... I reckon I will just go to the book store and find something.
Good drill coach for outprotection skills of your RB's:
Personnel needed: C-QB-2 RBS ON OFFENSE
2 DE'S- 1 MIKE BACKER ON DEFENSE
CENTER SNAPS BALL TO QB UP UNDER. QB TAKES 3-5 STEP DROP. DE'S CRASH TO QB WHO HITCHES UP IN THE POCKET AS THE 2 RB'S ATTACK THE CRASHING DE'S AND THE CENTER TAKES THE MIKE. ALSO SERVES AS GOOD DRILL FOR QB TO LEARN TO STEP UP IN POCKET WHILE STAYING INSIDE THE INSIDE LEG OF HIS GUARDS.

Irish56 coach has come up with a good drill, we do a similar drill, but we use the OL with the running backs because we slide the offensive line away from the RB's block. It allows us to work on the rush we will see in the game whether it is straight up or stunting.
