MAT DRILLS
Purpose: To develop quickness, the ability to change directions, to lengthen the fatigue factor, to develop mental toughness, and to respond effectively to instructions, to enhance:
1. Getting off a block
2. Getting to the football
3. Laying your body out to make a tackle
4. Explosion at the line of scrimmage
5. Breaking on the football
6. Establishing a block
7. Holding a block
8. Cutting to the hole
Drills: Nine drills used in approximately nine minutes and thirty seconds.
1. Bear and Touch
2. Parallel Run
3. Backward Crab
4. Forward Crab
5. Back Flops
6. Bear Wave
7. Seat Roll
8. Progressive Run
9. Read and Run
Procedure:
I. Bear and Touch
A. STARTING POSITION – Toes at end of mat, chin on the floor, palms facing up.
B. REACTION KEY – Sight
C. MOVEMENT – On the sight key the athlete will snap to a bear position and bear to the end of the mat and layout and tough off.
D. END OF DRILL – Athlete will snap into a hitting position, find coach, and break on his command.
II. PARALLEL RUN
A. STARTING POSITION – Left toe and left hand on the end of mat in 4 pt. stance
B. REACTION KEY – Sight
C. MOVEMENT – ON sight key the athlete will move lateral down the mat, at the end side roll.
PARALLEL RUN (Cont’d)
D. END OF DRILL – Athlete will snap into a hitting position, find coach and break on his command.
III. BACKWARD CRAB
A. STARTING POSITION – Flat on back, heels at end of mat
B. REACTION KEY – Sound
C. MOVEMENT – On sound key athlete will crab1/3 way, backward roll to a front crab, back to a back crab, flip and go to end in a bear
D. END OF DRILL – The athlete will layout touch off snap to a hitting position, find coach and break on his command.
IV. FORWARD CRAB
A. STARTING POSITION – Flat on back, head at end of mat.
B. REACTION KEY – Sound
C. MOVEMENT – On sound command forward crab 1/3 way, backward roll, forward roll, bear and touch off.
D. END OF DRILL – Snap into a hitting position and find the coach and break on his command.
V. BACK FLOPS
A. STARTING POSITION – Toes at end of mat, chin on floor, palms facing up.
B. REACTION KEY – Sound and sight
C. MOVEMENT – On sound command snap to a 4 pt. stance and move feet in position. On second command coach gives direction and athlete will tough scapula to mat and snap back to a 4 pt. stance. On coaches final command athlete will rorward roll bear and touch off.
D. END OF DRILL – Snap to a hitting position and break on coaches command.
VI. BEAR WAVE
A. STARTING POSITION – Toes at end of mat, chin on floor, palms facing up
B. REACTION KEY – Sound
C. MOVEMENT – On coaches command athlete will snap to a 4 pt. stance and move feet in position. On second command athlete will move laterally in that direction. On final command athlete will forward roll bear and touch off.
D. END OF DRILL – Snap into a hitting position and break on coaches command.
VII. SEAT ROLL
A. STARTING POSITION – Toes at end of mat, chin on floor, palms facing up.
B. REACTION KEY – Sound
C. MOVEMENT – On coaches command athlete will snap to a 4pt. stance with feet moving in place. Second command coach point athlete performs seat roll. Final command athlete will forward roll bear and touch off.
D. END OF DRILL – Snap into hitting positionand break on coaches command.
VIII PROGRESSIVE RUN
A. STARTING POSTION – Toes at end of mat, chin on floor, palms facing up
B. REACTION KEY – Sound
C. MOVEMENT – On Command athlete will snap to a 4 pt. stance and immediately start bear. Go 1/3 way and forward roll and come back and touch off. Repeat. Third time down go all the way and touch off.
D. END OF DRILL – Snap to a 4 pt. stance and break on coaches command.
IX READ AND RUN
A. STARTING POSITION – Lineman 4 pt. Linebackers and sec. 2 pt. stance
B. REACTION KEY – Sight
C. MOVEMENT – Athletes will jump to position straddling the midline. Coach will give direction and athlete will sprint to that side and touch off.
D. END OF DRILL – Snap into a hitting position, find the coach and break on his command.
TOUCHING OFF – When a football player throws his body reaching with all he has to be the first one to cross the line. When doing it correctly the first part of the body to make contact is the chest. Football is a game of throwing your body either to:
1. Make a tackle
2. Make a block
3. Make an extra yard
4. Going for the football
X. NECK ISO – (in partners) Approx. Time: 14 MIN.
