Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am thinking about changing our punt formation to a DBL tight, double wing with a personal protector 4 yards behind the right guard. 6" splits. What is the best simple, effective way to block?
Coach, in high school we ran a tight punt with 6 in. splits and our responsibility was to step inside and pick up anyone who came in our gap. When the ball was punted, we would release outside and stay in our lanes. Then, we would converge to the football. Coach, this may not be the best system, but it is the simplest, and as I have heard so many times. THE SIMPLEST THINGS WORK BEST! Good luck with your season, Coach.

Have always ran a dble tight formation with an upback behind the tackle (your going with guard placement) at 7 yds depth and 2 personal protectors in the A gaps at 1 yd. off LOS. Both EMLOS release on the snap, go to the ball. Line in 1 ft. splits block inside and release and take STAGGERD path to the ball within their respective lanes (easiest man to block is the guy who runs a straight line to his assignment on any special teams) imo. The two personal protectors check A gaps and then release to their side and become contain men for any type of gadget return techniques. Up back takes on any threat, blocking inside out and then goes to ball. Punter mirrors returner. We will throw in an occasional flexed end formation, just to let the D see it, when we have decided to go with a fake punt and throw to the up back escaping on the snap into the flat on his side. The flexed ends effectively account for 4 defenders usually, with the defense going to the trend of doubleing them on both sides today.

Our team takes pride in blocking punts. We scheme and gameplan every week on ways we can beat their punt protect scheme to get a block. We have gotten one in almost every game or at leats force a bad punt. Moral to the story is, I love when teams line up like that! The quickest way to the ball is up the middle and our blocks usually come from A or B gap. If you don't protect the middle we will block you. We use a spread punt with two upbacks guarding A gap and we use 3 foot splits. Each man is assigned a man to block. Our first rule? NOTHING GETS UP THE MIDDLE. If someone can block a kick from the outside with our wide splits then they deserve it. They have to be an athlete. Just something to keep in mind.
Don't quite understand how your going to come up the middle with my 2 upbacks in the A gaps until after the snap, who check inside and then go downfield as contain after the kick. Am I missing something?

Actually I was responding to CUI's punt formation. In fact, your punt formation is similar to our with the exception of the double tights. I agree, it would be nearly impossible to block from the middle. We also use 3 foot splits which lengthens the distance the outside rushers have to travel. I have also been blessed with a snapper who will probably snap on the college level and can snap 15 yards in 0.9 seconds and a young punter with a catapult for a leg.
Sorry, didn't mean to jump the gun. I thought you were referring to my post. How is your season going down in the land of the Hurricanes this year? I had my share of them in 40 years in Florida, it gets old doesn't it? Hope you were safe and not to badly inconvenienced! What is your recod now, so far?

Hurricanes blew over and cancelled a game but thats it. We have dropped 3 in a row against bigger sized schools. Yes, that's how they do it down here. Even though we are 3A we have to play 4 and 5A schools. We are 1-4 but play schools our size the rest of the way and feel really good about winning out and finishing 5-4 or even 6-4 if they reschedule the hurricane game. Special teams has had its ups and downs. Had to get on the kids tough at the beginning for not hustling but they have improved greatly. I have a young punter who is solid but makes silly mistakes like dropping good snaps or kicking deep when I tell him to squib. Our kickoff return is tops in the county though and teams are beginning to kick away from us. That is something I am proud of. How about you?
As you know I had planned to take the year off and go fishing and hunting. But, an old friend called me with team problems centered around the coaching staff, ad asked me if I would take over the job. It was the first time in 41 years of not being on the field, and the old itch took over. Signed a contract and went to work. They had three games left on their schedule, so was not able to implement my system at all. They were 0-7. We played to a 5 quarter tie with a team that had beat them 44-0 in their season opener (we play NFL rules). We lost the next week 14-6 to a team that had beat them 32-0. We lost the last game 28-13 to a team that had drilled them 36-0 earlier in the season. Although we showed steady progress and were much more competitive, we were not able to pull off a win. Our season ended Oct 2nd. I immediately went to work scheduling scouting combines to bring in a better class of talent, and attitudes. We are getting after it. I know how you have to play the bigger schools in Florida, was there and done that for a lot of years. Don't look at the pile, just keep choppin'. Good luck the rest of the way.

I forgot about this thread, and now find this pretty interesting as I am considering changes for next year. We have since gone to a spread punt, 6 in splits, Sprinters lined up like split ends, and our upbacks just off the line and out side the Tackles, personal protector at 4 yds. We have been taking 2 shuffle steps back at the snap and then blocking inside gap. We've had one punt blocked... off the edge... and the personal protector just flat out missed him. I feel like it's my fault though because I always tell them block inside first and make them run around. This time it didn't work. Maybe we should widen our splits to 3 ft like mentioned above? Tell me, how do you block then? Still inside gap, or do you number the men? Thanks.
