Coach Campbell,
Last year we began running Outside Zone and Inside Zone. Both schemes are based on Gibbs. My head coach likes to run zone out of a 1-back 2 TE set. OZ worked pretty good, but our IZ play did not. We ended up running IZ out of our offset I formations. I am trying to improve our IZ play out of a one back set. I came across your 1-Back Offense book and am interested in using your scheme. The easiest way to describe my question is to refer to pages in your book. Your 42/43 Base is the closest thing to our IZ play. Am I correct in thinking your 42/43 Base Open side is similar to Gibbs tight zone weak with the exception of the direction the QB opens? Our tight zone is almost always a cutback.
1st Question. 42/43 Base/Openside pg 166.
On this page you show 43 base vs 33,4-3, 50 defense. What is the footwork and aiming points of ...
1) the Left side (openside) Guard and Centers ACE LION block? 2) the Right side (tightend) Guard and Tackle DUECE block?
I’m thinking my confusion rest on the belief that the lineman’s first step is with their playside foot. So on page 166 the both guard’s first step would be with their left foot, but to execute the combo’s you show it seems those two’s first step would be with their backside foot. We called that technique a “wrong step”.
2nd Question: Would you block 42/43 BASE(Openside) vs a 44 Stack (Double 2 tech DTs with stacked Lbers , a 5 tech DE to the openside and a 6 tech DE to the closed side, and 2 overhang lbers? Similar to what you call a 40 Nickel defense (see page 169)
