I just got done reading Teryl Austin's (DB coach, University of Michigan) "Stuffing the Run With a Nine-Man Front" article in the AFCA's "Defensive Football Strategies." To say the least, I was quite impressed. It's basically a 4-3 Under, but with uber-aggressive safties. Coach Austin, however, refers to it as an Eagle front.
On inside run to the strong side - #1) The Mike takes on the FB. #2) The Will "should" be free to make the play. #3) The SS becomes the extra man to the playside. #4) The FS becomes the cutback player.
On inside run to the weak side - #1) The Will takes on the FB. #2) The Mike "should" be free to make the play. #3) The FS becomes the extra man to the playside. #4) The SS becomes the cutback player.
In coverage - #1) The CBs are man to man with the outside WR's. Twins, the CB comes over. #2) The LBs have 3 on 3 coverage with the TE and 2 backs. If the TE goes vertical more than 10yds, the SS takes him.
I wish Coach Austin would go on to describe the defense against other offensive looks, but he doesn't. Do any of you have any experience with it? Do any of you know where I could find more information on it? The article was written in 1999, while Teryl Austn (now with the Arizona Cardinals) was still with Michigan...so I'm assuming defensive literature from any one on that staff would be helpful.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!!
Sincerely,
Blue
