I've been coaching for several years at the high school level and I have seen alot of football--some good and some not so good. I have coached in a handful of different schemes, both offensively and defensively, and have schemed against countless others. I am starting a position this fall with a school that I am hoping will turn into my "dream" job. I am expecting a fantastic teaching opportunity to open up in the next year or two, and I hope that I can take over the football program before long. It is a good opportunity to get my foot in the door, But...
Upon reading through the coach's manual, I have come to realize that thier offensive and defensive schemes are lacking (to say the least). This is a small, private school that plays in a class 1-A designation. Despite this their offensive system is a grab-bag of plays and formations. Obviously this leads to a rather large number of blocking schemes from a true zone scheme to BOB trap blocking to some sort of I-don't-know-what-the-hell-they're-doing approach. Defensively they run a base 4-4, but they have only 4 men in the box (5 if you count the weak side end who is on the outside shade of the OT). They have a basic 4-3 and 50 fronts, that are a little better, but not much. As I was reading through this manual and looking through the play-book, I started saying "This needs to be changed" and "That is not sound"...etc.
My problem and question is, how can I help tighten some of this up without looking like I'm coming in as an outsider who's over-stepping his bounds. I really don't know the coaches very well, and I don't think that they are really guys who live for coaching as it is. I don't want to come in and seem like an ass, but at the same time, I don't want to be pulling my hair out (the little I have left) all season because we are costing ourselves due to a system that is, in my opinion, anything but sound and well thought out. Have any of you ever entered into a situation similar to this? If so, how did you handle it? Thanks in advance.
