I'm in the middle of a very interesting situation. Monday was our first day of practice and things went well. The JV HC and I had a good discussion about the next day's practice and I went home and refined the practice plan I had made. Tuesday morning comes and I come upstairs from our equipment room after getting a helmet for a kid who had missed Monday. I am greeted by our AD who informs me he just got off the phone with the wife of the JV HC. He had a heart attack the night before and he is in the hospital. First reaction, "Is he o.k.?" AD doesn't know. Second thought, we have to get practice reorganized in less than 1/2 hour and I'm in charge. The past two days have been a bit of a whirlwind. One of the modified coaches has been gracious enough to come and help out so we have three coaches working with the JV team. Before moving on to any other football stuff, our coach is doing well. His triple bypass went well Tuesday afternoon. He was taken off the respirator today and actually ate some food today as well. We are planning on visiting him as a staff as soon as he is moved off of the cardiac floor at the hospital. As for the football end, my head is spinning. I have planned for the day of becoming the HC of some level for a few years, but I never thought it would come under these type of circumstances. I have to address the team tomorrow and tell them what happened and what the situation with the team is now. I'm trying to think of the best way to do that. I think I have all the parent permission slips and other various paperwork under control. I have adjusted the practice plans I had made out for defense to account for this and the OC has adjusted his plans as well. I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for from anyone in terms of a response, but I've posted here when I've not been sure and even just writing it out has helped me to see things correctly. I hope someone here can say something that will help slow down the carosel that is going on in my brain right now. Thanks for listening to my ramblings.
