Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We had a little trouble over the weekend with the QB scramble off the boot pass. Our coverage was good, but when the QB would tuck and run we had trouble getting to him.
Any rules you can share of when to drop coverage and come up, the who when and why.
I had an OUTSTANDING defensive coordinator in high school who ran the 4-2-5, and we did it like this...
FIRST - The defensive ends should ALWAYS have outside contain!!! ESPECIALLY on a QB run. However, if you don't have player(s) at defensive end, you've got a great blocking TE pinning down your 6i, or you've got an OUTSTANDING athlete at QBt...you can do a few things:
My favorite (and excuse the 4-4 terminology) - The OLB to the roll-out side can "punch" (aka...attack the QB). In this case, the...
- FS: takes deep 1/2 to the rollout side.
- Backside CB: takes the other deep 1/2.
- Playside CB: takes the flat to the rollout side (he's gonna have to jam up the outside WR a little to give the FS time).
- Playside ILB: takes the curl to the rollout side.
- Backside ILB: takes the "hole" (underneath middle 1/3).
- Backside OLB: takes the backside "alley" (underneath outside 1/3).
...There are MUCH wiser 4-2-5 guru's on the board who will soon respond with their ideas, but that's mine.

thats how we do it at the college i'm playing at. ONLY problem with that is a real michael vick-type burning your ILB to the edge. IF you've got a real burner back there, its probably best to send outside pressure to contain. Otherwise, its probably best to let that outside backer to cover the flat and bring the ILB.

Being an ex-QB, always have felt that putting a SPY on these hot shot running QB's is the way to go. As a coach, I always use the Mike from tackle to tackle, or the Sam or Will when he comes out to their respective side. If they can't run with him, put in a true DB who can hit in place of the LB who can't run with him. Works great for us.

We always drop OLB flats and attack with PS ILB. It's a hard throw to make accross your body back to middle of field to the zone vacated by ILB. Works well for us. Another thing is, Our 4-4 DE's have OUTSIDE rush contain on pass only. This helps as well.
You can get by running cover 2 or 4 (or both) vs 2x2 spread. If in 2, CB MUST read #2 for a vertical release and convert to quarters or lock on #1. Cover 2 is a decent call in running situations because you can keep 7 in (or near) the box.

Coach in the past we have run Cover 2 mainly with the inside players redirecting the receivers. Now we are primarily a cover 1 team vs most spread formation teams. You can also play alittle Cover 2 man. You should have more than one coverage available, take advantage of the abilities of your athletes.
