I love the game of football and i have been coaching since i was 18 in youth football leagues.I am now the president of a youth football team for children 5-14.I don't have a teaching degree i work in construction.I have a GED never went to college.Where do i start if i wanted to coach high school ball? You can post here or mail me coach_kmull_prov_chargers@yahoo.com
Should i get a teaching degree? What is the average pay to coach at a school starting with assistants? What can i do to help myself for a school to look at me for a coaching spot over other coaches?
I am not a teacher either, I work in IT as a Sysadmin/Database admin. but still coach high school football. This year I'm working with freshman and JV. I started out as a volunteer with a program and went from there. It definitely helps to be an employee of the school when it comes to scheduling but it's not a dramatic setback. About half of our staff this year is a full time employee of the school system.
If you want to be a head coach, you're probably going to have to put in the time and work your way up much like I'm doing now. I played in high school, and have coached flag and youth league football on and off since i graduated high school in 2001. Even as a head coach for a successful youth league team it was hard to get my foot in the door, but our area of the state is fairly strong with the good ole boys network so it is initially tough to get into if you are not from the area, which I wasn't.
Putting your time in is just the nature of how the profession goes. I've learned as much from spending the late spring/summer/ and now in season from the other coaches as i had in any of my coaching endeavors before. My recommendation is to find a good coach who coaches a system you want to learn or are familiar with and stick to him like glue. Learn the ins and outs from him. Never stop learning.
I am not a teacher either. Out staff is 1/2 teachers 1/2 not. A good place to start for non-teachers is at a private/religious school. The teachers there are generally not unionized and have less influence over such things.
If you have coached youth for a while, you must have former players in the local high schools. Maybe some of there parents would recommend you.
My first high school experience was as a volunteer scout for a catholic school.
Good luck.

First off, I want to start by saying that this is a lot of information to cover in one discussion board.
My Program Organization is built around me managing basically every aspect of the program and even though that sounds good, it is a lot of work. In the future it will not be like that because I will need to delegate tasks more, but since this is my first year as a Head Coach I am trying to make sure the foundations are put down the way I want the program to be built. So obviously I am not going to list every single aspect of the program, but understand I look over it all.
Assistant Coaches expectations are pretty detailed, you guys might remember the week we had to do that as a discussion board and all of my expectations are clearly defined and went over with them as coaches before they sign the paper with all the expectations on it. This is pretty thorough, more so than the previous school I was at, which had nothing like that.
The offense is ran by me. We are a Spread Offense. This year we are going to keep the offense simple and control the games with the drives we put together. We do not have enough players to run a no huddle offense like last year. A good majority of my players are playing both ways because of that. Controlling the game will give us an advantage in that regard.
The defense is ran by my Defensive Coordinator who is the most experienced guy on staff. We are a 3-4 Defense, but blitz like it is a 4-3. We try and give offenses a variety of looks to keep them guessing. We will have to see how our first scrimmage goes. Defensively we looked pretty good in passing league so we will see.
Kick Game is overseen by our Running Back coach who is the special teams coordinator as well. I would have to say the biggest difference we have compared to a more traditional kicking game is that we use a spread punt because one of our Wide Receivers is a good punter and can throw the ball as well.
In season practice starts with a 7th Period weight lifting class followed by practice Monday through Thursday. Monday being a film and install day. Tuesday being a study hall followed by a full pad practice of Offense and Defense. Wednesday being a game situational Day. Thursday is a walk through with the team dinner that night. Game days are Fridays and Film days are Sundays as a staff.
The Leadership Program will go from January to May covering various topics which spell the word "Leadership" Our leadership program will teach a lot of the necessary characteristics that kids now a days are lacking. Especially this years football team. I have no true leaders on my team for whatever reason and I am hoping that changes before we get into the season.
Off season will be from January until the beginning of Mandatory Spring Ball. This year was kind of off because I did not get the job until March, but next year there will definitely be some changes when it comes to making sure they are lifting in their class and learning the basics of football with a lot of individual time teaching them technique.
Our Summer program goes Monday through Thursday with a 2 week break around July 4th. During this time they spend 1 hour in the weight room and another 90 minutes or so out on the field working ind time, group time, and team time. Once the actual Fall season begins in July it is Monday through Friday and special teams starts getting added into the mix.
There is a lot of behind the scene things that I take care of such as fund raising by selling fireworks in our own firework stand, which I work everyday from July 1st to July 4th. We also sell discount cards, which we are actually doing right now as our other fund raiser. Most recently I have been trying to put together some kind of football booster made up of football parents compared to the school wide booster we have for every sport. This booster would look after the specific needs of the football team.
