Vs a 2 man surface do you play your DE's angled or squared up vs the OT in a base scheme? They aren't leverage players but still have C gap with an outside backer there. I'm just curious what you all think of this technique and also to see if anyone uses it. Thanks in advance
PLAY “WIDE 5” – 2 FEET OUTS. OT – ATTACK HIP OF OT ON SNAP). NOTE: IF CONFRONTED WITH A TE – PLAY EXACTLY AS 3 TECHNIQUE ABOVE FROM A “NORMAL 5” ). C GAP RESPONSIBILITY!
A. Vs. TURNOUT BLOCK OF OT: - Attack hip of OT maintaining proper leverage. Keep outside leg and arm free. Bend to near back. Maintain outside leverage and bend to football.
B. OT BLOCKS DOWN INSIDE: Point toe to OT, locating near back, (if near back goes away, locate ANY OL coming inside out). Bend inside and treat kickout by near back and OL the same. Take out his inside shoulder with your outside shoulder. Come underneath kickout. Other possibilities when OT blocks inside = option, or play away.
C. OT PULLS INSIDE: Stay in OT’s hip pocket and run to football.
If he is not the force which he shouldnt be then always yes. Now vs. option teams if he is tilted he will always be taking away the dive.
the advantages are...
A. If he gets tackle down he is running the heel line of the offensive line, if he gets any second level blocker (pulling Guard/fullback) he is already in a position to spill it to our force defender.
B. If no second level blocker appears it must be run away he still runs the heel line flat down the LOS and if the back trys to cut back at all the tilt end will absolutly destroy him I see it almost every time we play a zone team.
C. If the team runs option and you run the heel line and you have a really quick son of a gun there he will tackle the mesh!
D. if the tackle blocks out on him he is in a position to explode into him lock it out and drive the tackle back
E. If he gets high hat pass set by the tackle he is on a straight line for the QB.
I probably forgot some but as you can tell I like this technique alot and I think it has alot of merit for C gap DE's
Shoot me an Email if you have more questions or want advice on how to incorperate it into your scheme.
