Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
He should be able to cover a deep 1/3 of the field (& at LEAST 1/3 the distance the ball is in the air). Don't take your eyes off the passer & break on th ball when his front hand comes off the ball AND the front shoulder starts down.
Put DB in middle of 1/3 & a receiver on each periphery of the 1/3. As QB throws - he breaks in that direction & should be able to break up or "pick" the pass!

There is somewhat of a "trend" going around in the NFL & major college. IF you play a F/S in Man/Free @20 yds deep on passing downs - he can (with a good "break on the ball") cover SIDELINE TO SIDELINE! Offensive Coordinators are forced to TREAT that like a 2 deep zone!
You mean the trend is to ALIGN THE FS AT 20 YDS DEEP OR REVERT TO THAT DEPTH? If they align that deep how do they defend the 12 to 15 yd routes (square ins, etc.) ?

We played a team that ran this type of defense last year against our spread. They lined up in a 33 stack with the FS literally lined up at punt return depth. We had one of the best receivers in the region and had been very successful throwing the fade, so they just tried to run down hill at it and knock the guys head off. I think we finished that game with something like 45 points though, and our receiver on the other side of the field had three touchdowns, not to mention a pretty good rushing game by our RB, since they were basically playing with 10 on D.
I do think what oneback describes could be a good defense on obvious passing downs, but as a base it was pretty ineffective.
We played a team that played a safety deep like that a few years ago, it helped that their front 8 were animals and their FS was about 6'2 and the fastest guy on the field. We completed a few nice passes to the sidelines, but our wr's were getting drilled.

Coach Mountjoy, thanks for the 20 yard idea. Sounds like a good change up especially when you are playing tight man. I agree with Buice, as a base it would be like playing with 10. It is another way to mix it up. When playing man we mix it up, play tight man with a FS at 10 in the MOF. Play man and bail and roll down the FS late to a 5 yard depth to play screens, back outs, and run.(since we are blitzing both inside backers.) I guess you could do the same with 2 deep safeties in cover 2 in obvious passing situations.
Anyone that would be willing to share any info on 6, 7 man blitzes from the 4-4 aka 4-2-5 I would appreciate it. Also 4 to a side. Please email me at scott.williams@wayne.k12.in.us
NOTE: This is an "NFL" & "Major College" thing, used JUST with Cover 1, & used JUST in passing situations - not advised vs. teams that MAJOR in option football!
