Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
The scheme my highschool team runs is a 4-3 gap control defense. We read lineman and spill pullers. We are nearly always successful at doing this. We've been having problems with basic isolation plays. 7 out of the 9 teams we play are bigger than us. Our backers fill hard for the most part but we are still giving up 3 to 5 yards a play on an iso. I'm thinking about working on slanting a lineman here and there when we think they are going to run iso's. At Freshman and JV we just walk up our free safety at times and just send him but this is not what we want to do at Varsity because it is basically just rolling the dice. We can stem to try to confuse the lineman but even that will only go so far. Any suggestions would be great.
DE – 9 Technique. Take 1 step across & come inside to force. Pitch on option. Contain pass rush (take B across your face on screen/flare/etc.).
DT – 4 Technique. Slant OR Pinch with “Rip” technique:
A) “Slant” call TO your side = Rip across OT’s face with backside forearm & put your outside shoulder to TE’s inside hip. QB on option.
B) “Pinch” call, or, “Slant” call AWAY from your side = Rip across OT’s face with backside forearm & put your inside shoulder to OG’s outside hip. Dive on option.
NOSE – 0 Technique. Slant with same technique as DT’s.
A) “Slant” call you usually will slant to the OG on the call side (usually TE side).
B) “Pinch” call – the MLB will give you the direction. Dive on option.
MLB = Stack behind the Nose. Key Fullback in I (or single back in 1 Back set). Take A Gap responsibility opposite Nose’s slant. Dive on option.
OLB’s = Align in C gap. Take a read step with inside foot & read Tailback (or back away if not an I).
A) “Slant” away from you, & “Pinch” – basic C gap responsibility. QB to Pitch on option.
B) “Slant” to you – B gap responsibility. Dive on option.
This is what we normally do, I don't like this especially on the weakside unless my weak side Corner can give run support which luckily I got a couple strong kids who can do this, this year.
The standard 8 man in the Box is always the best run stop you can have. But if you're team has trouble on ISO plays I don't think more DL will help you. a 4-4 might be better especially if you run a 4-3 since all you would need to do is swap a Safety for another backer or just bring a Safety. On inside runs if your team is gap control have the DL hold their spots if they can and do what the Pats do and shed the blocker as the ball carrier comes by and ankle tackle while a backer hits from the front.

Yea that is what we do is walk one of our safeties into a gap but then teams tend to attack him. I have been putting my best tackling Cover guy behind him which has helped with stopping 10 plus plays but it does not help with holding our opponents under 5 yards a wack.

Our players have not been taught to slant and our backers have not been taught to read the line when our lineman slant. Do you coaches think this can be taught in a matter of days or weeks. Or should this be an offseason project to add to our defensive scheme. Rightnow we get in a gap, read and react which works fine except when teams bring the house.
