Looking for a little adjustment help vs 3x1 from our base 4-2-5. I looked back through the archives and it seems like going 4-3 cv4 look is the standard. Currently we are basically skying the trips side and manning up the backside. To the trips side we have been OK but have not seen any teams that run verts out of it mostly flood or in & out stuff.
Where we are getting into trouble is on the backside with the 1. Both my corners are athletic but small and teams are dropping fades on them in man coverage. We have had probably four big plays against us this way, and I am guessing we will see more till we get control of it. My thought was to play the WOLB over the top and press the 1 with the C, but that seems too situational to me.
Our next two games we will see a boat load of 2x2 and 3x1 and motion back and forth between the two.
I HAVE RAN THE 4-2-5 FOR 20 PLUS YEARS AND AM A MAN COVER GUY ALL THE WAY! ROLL YOUR CB'S UP HARD WITH INSIDE LEVERAGE AND PLAY MAN FREE BEHIND THEM. WE HAVE HARD AND FAST RULE ABOUT WHO HAS WHO, NO MATTER WHAT THEY COME OUT IN! CB'S TAKE 1'S, TIGER BACKS AS WE CALL THEM (TWIN SS'S) OR YOU PROBABLY CALL THEM OSLB'S ALWAYS HAVE THE # 2 RECEIVERS TO EITHER SIDE AND WE ALWAYS WALK OUT A LB ON # 3 TRIPS SIDE.
YOU SAY YOUR CORNER'S ARE GETTING BEAT IN MAN. MY ADVICE COACH, IS TO COACH THEM UP AND TEACH THEM TO PLAY BUMP AND RUN, NOT TURN AND RUN!!! ANYTIME YOU GIVE A RECEIVER A FREE RELEASE INTO HIS PATTERN YOUR GUY IS GOING TO BE AT A DISADVANTAGE! THE HARDEST THING TO TEACH A RECEIVER IS TO GET OFF THE JAM, PERIOD! SO, IN VIEW OF THAT WHY JUST LET HIM RELEASE FREE???
VERSES A 3 X 1 LOOK, YOU CAN DOUBLE YOUR BACK SIDE OSLB WITH THE CORNER ON THE X IF YOUR CORNER CAN'T HANDLE HIM ALONE. THIS LEAVES YOU VULNERABLE TO A BACKSIDE RUN AND YOU COMPENSATE FOR THAT BY HAVING THE ISLB ON THAT SIDE SPY THE RUN.
JUST A FEW SUGGESTIONS AS ALWAYS.

4-2-5 with Cover 1 Man/Free ADJUSTS to a 4-3 look vs. 3x1.
MANY (not ALL) 4-3 Cover 4 teams adjust to a Cover 3 (bringing S/S down) vs. 3x1.
No more time for typing IN-SEASON. I try to prepare for these things in the OFF-SEASON. IF you have more questions - PHONE 804-378-0116 up to 10 PM/EDT!
Put your corner(s) on the slots if you must and put someone taller/better on the backside SE for fade.
Cover 3 if not sound vs 3x1 if you are playing a team with a decent passing game. They can and will run four verticals out of 3x1. Moreover, If your CB is mismatched on deep ball in cover 1, he is equally mismatched in cover 3. The same SE will beat him on a deep fade.
Stop them with numbers on one side and talent on the other.
If you really have NOONE on your team that can cover, you are in trouble in man or zone. You will need to set traps and try for picks. My sympathies if that is your situation.

That about sums it up...if we can't get pressure fast, which means we have to send more than the front four we start playing blitz poker. We are starting 7 new guys as LB's & DB's and the inexperience showing at times.
I find myself trying to do what I can to protect our DB's (maybe too much). We can play short passes and slower developing plays but verts out of anything we are dead, we gave up another big one tis week. This week it was a wing that blew by the SS & FS in cv1.
We have a couple who can cover, but not enough and no height at all. We won this week because of dropped passes and throws that took this WR out of bounds. The whole team went to church together the morning of game. I guess we pray better than we play!

You can play cover 2-man under but that is very weak against the run. If the team you play has strong tendencies maybe you can try it. Not advisable if their QB is a good runner though.
