Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coach - what do you think would work best against a 4-3 cover 4? We don't play against this defense very often - we mostly 50 defenses and some 4-4 every once in a while. We are going to be running ISV, MID, TRAP, CUTBACK, and maybe even LEAD - just wondering if we might be missing out on anything. Thanks for your time!!
Do they roll up the corners and play hard or do they sit off in zone all the way? Your play selection sounds good, with maybe some sweeps and an iso tossed in as good compliment to your option game. I always recommend that if you run the ISV you need to install the OSV as well. What is your base offensive formation?

Well if they do that then they're not really running a 4-3 anymore are they? If they stack the backers they're in a cover 3 and then we have all sorts of passing options open to us. If they go head up and I really want to run veer I'll just go at my best Guard vs. D-Tackle match-up. We also have typical I formation plays such as Iso, Power, and Toss to take advantage of teams that use funky alignments to combat the option. (6 Run plays in our Offense: ISV, Midline, Trap, Iso, Power, Toss)
Last week my gameplan was basically to stay in a 3 wide look (I-Formation Twins to one side and Split End away) in order to keep them in a 4-3. It was very successful last week as I said running midline to the 3 and veer to the 2i. Eventually they went head up on our guards but they still only had the middle backer.
I think the scheme was sound but the real reason we were so successful, which is usually the case when you have success, is that our players were better than their players.
We are a split back veer team, and I forgot to mention that we do run OSV. From what I have seen, they play prob 10 yards off all the way across; they will walk up the SS at times to make it look like a 4-4. We like midline and cutback to the 3 tech, and ISV to the 1/shade nose; we feel like we can run our trap and lead/iso to either side, and depending on the DE alignment, we think OSV is good both sides as well. Also, we aren't a 100% split back veer team, as we like to get in the shotgun and run some power o and couter trey - we like that against the team we play this week as well.
Your right, of course, about it no longer being a 4-3 but in this day and time you had better be able to come up with these hybrid adjustments in order to win. Just my opinion as always. Your also right about it leaving you vulnerable to the pass, but on the high school level after 30 years of coaching it, am convinced that the GOOD passer is few and far between and I coached in Florida for most of a 42 year on field career. I would send the dogs on every play as that is what you do against a good passer and make him hurry into mistakes in order to help out the secondary. Just my way as always.

Out of pro formation, trap tothe strength is best (m/o). I would rather trap a 3 than having to trap the 5 or 4i. to the weak side. Also you can align in twins and run iso at the Mike with the olb removed. After a time or two of this, they may have to man up and then the OSV/ISv is more effective, probably a pitch read

Traps and Counter Trey are usually very successful against the 4-3 defenses. If you have anything that resembles a stretch run or ISO cutback with a trap. The key imho to defeating a 4-3 team is misdirection and shearing down the backside defenders.
Its not about how much YOU know about the game, its about how much you share that knowledge with the people around you.
Excellent point coach. We also like to run #2 removed on a skinny post and #1 on a Curl or Dig. This takes #2 away from any chance at robbing the curl or dig.
