Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coach,
When running power off tackle vs a 5 tech, we have a double team at the POA. My questions is the footwork on the double. We want to take the double back to the BSILB. What are the coaching points you use when teaching this double team.
Glaze
Do you COMBO him or DOUBLE TEAM him as there is a difference in the two types of blocks. A double team is when you get hip to hip and DRIVE BLOCK the DLM. A combo block is when one hits the DLM high and slides to backer, while other hits him waist high and maintains block. Are you talking about a DEUCE block with the guard and tackle, or a TREY block with the tackle and TE? What defense are you talking about that your going to see?

We are stepping to get hip to hip. If our tackle and guard are doubling we expect the tackle to give enough of a shot to the DL to turn his shoulders, the guard is stepping to block big on big. It is important to step to hip to hip so there is no gap for the DL to split the double, we are working to get upfield movement, basically at a 45 degree angle, I tell them if they do it right, no one should have to come off, they should run the DT into the LB. It is important that the tackle never gets his outside arm involved or he won't get to the next level, stay square to LOS, DO NOT banana around the DL to get to the LB, go through him. See the LB feel the DL, that way you can take care of any games they might run.
KINDA TALL ASSIGNMENT TO NOT HAVE SOMEBODY COME OFF TO GET TO A BSISLB ISN'T IT? A DT BLOCK LIKE YOUR USING USUALLY ENTAILS BOTH OLM'S GETTING HIP TO HIP AND DRIVE BLOCKING THE DLM STRAIGHT BACK.

I tell them that if it works perfectly they shouldn't have to come off because we have gotten a 4-5 yd push, it rarely works perfectly. They should still be seeing the LB, if he flows over the top the tackle would come off, if he comes under the guard would pick him. If we get enough push he and the backs hit it quickly he should have to flow over to get to the play and run into the DT. Obviously that's in a perfect world.
VERTICAL DOUBLE TEAM TECHNIQUE ON “POWER” (“DUECE”/”TREY”):
COACHING POINT: “GET KNEES WORKING NORTH & SOUTH; 4 HANDS ON DLM & 4 EYES ON Lber”.
“POST” (INSIDE BLOCKER): GAIN VERTICAL LEVERAGE (YOUR PADS LOWER THAN DLM’S PADS). FIRST STEP = DEPENDS ON HORIZONTAL LEVERAGE OF DLM ON YOU. IF HE IS TIGHT ON YOU – TAKE A 3” LATERAL STEP WITH YOUR INSIDE FOOT. IF HE HAS A WIDER SHADE ON YOU – PICK UP INSIDE FOOT & PUT IT DOWN (DON’T STEP AWAY FROM LEAD BLOCKER – GIVE HIM “BODY PRESENCE”). LANDMARK = NEAR (INS.) PEC OF DLM. SECOND STEP = DRIVE OUTSIDE KNEE UPFIELD PLACING IT JUST INSIDE OF INSIDE KNEE OF DLM. 2 HAND PUNCH TO NEAR PEC & EYES LOOK INSIDE IMMEDIATELY (FOR Lber RUN THRU). DO NOT LET INSIDE FOOT GO BEYOND OUTSIDE FOOT – SO YOU CAN COME OFF INSIDE. WHOEVER COMES OFF FOR BS/LB AIM FOR INSIDE # OF LB (SO HE MUST GO OVER THE TOP).
“DRIVE” (OUTSIDE BLOCKER): GAIN VERTICAL LEVERAGE (YOUR PADS LOWER THAN DLM’S PADS). FIRST STEP = TAKE A LATERAL STEP WITH YOUR INSIDE FOOT TO CLOSE AREA BETWEEN POST BLOCKER & YOURSELF. LANDMARK = NEAR (OUTS.) PEC OF DLM. SECOND STEP = OUTSIDE FOOT UPFIELD. THIRD STEP = DRIVE INSIDE KNEE UPFIELD PLACING IT JUST INSIDE OF OUTSIDE KNEE OF DLM. 2 HAND PUNCH TO NEAR PEC & STAY SQUARE (BOTH POST & LEAD BLOCKER STAY SQUARE – HIP TO HIP & SHOULDER TO SHOULDER).
NOTE: FROM MY OBSERVATION OF NY GIANTS 2007 FILM – IT APPEARED THAT THE BLOCKERS STAYED ON THE “VERTICAL DOUBLE TEAM” TOGETHER FOR 3-4 STEPS (ON THE AVERAGE) BEFORE ONE OF THEM (USUALLY THE “POST” BLOCKER) CAME OFF FOR THE LB. THIS VARIES FROM PLAY TO PLAY – OF COURSE.
NOTE: IF CTR & ON G ARE BOTH COVERED - PLAYSIDE HAS TO DOWN BLOCK (NOT DOUBLE TEAM):
DOWN BLOCK
The Down Block is executed by the offensive lineman blocking on an angle towards the ball. We drill the down block using the near shoulder as a landmark.
A. DOWN BLOCK A “PENETRATOR”: Step with your near foot at the near shoulder of the defender and place your head in front of the defender’s near shoulder. Upon contact adjust to the defender’s reaction to the football by turning into the defender with a good blocking base and using your hands and feet to finish the block.
B. DOWN BLOCK VS. A “READER”: Step with your near foot at the near shoulder of the defender and place your head behind the shoulder of the defender. Upon contact adjust to the defender’s reaction to the football by turning into the defender with a good blocking base and using your hands and feet to finish the block.

Tiger,
We trey combo to the bslb. If the 5 tech cheats to a head up alignment dose your footwork change at all for the tackle with the threat of the tight 5 tech threaten the b gap? We do a decent job of blocking the power with the TE/PST, but have had some trouble with Okie and 30 stack stunts/ blitz.
NORMALLY ON POWER WE LEAD UP INTO THE HOLE WITH THE WRAPPING BACKSIDE GUARD AND KICK OUT THE DE WITH THE FB. WE DON'T TREY BLOCK IT WITH THE T-TE. WHEN YOU DO THAT ,HOW DO YOU GET TO THE BACKSIDE LB? A VANILLA 52 OKIE LEAVES THE GUARDS UNCOVERED AND A DEUCE BLOCK WILL GET YOU TO THE BSLB QUICKER.

The way I described it (ABOVE) is how Pat Flaherty - excellent O-Line Coach of the NY Giants teaches it (verbatim). They stuck the "POWER" down the Patriots throat in the Super Bowl. When Richard Seymour lined up in a "5" - they TOOK HIM FOR A RIDE BACKWARDS on several occassions!!!!!!!
