Coach - I was reading in another forum about running ISV to a 4/4i, and I am guessing that if it is a 50 def, the DE becomes the pitch key?? We will see a 50 slant - they like to slant to the field and sometimes to the formation. Is this a sound play? We are used to pitching off of a LB/S player that is not as close as the DE will be.....thanks for your input
Here is the way it goes down coach against a 50 front:
Qb reads first man outside of the B hole which is usually a 4i, 4 or a 5 technique down tackle. If he is in a 4i it becomes an automatic pull and he then gets upfield to his second read, the DE who is his pitch read. If he is in a 5 tech, it then becomes an automatic give to the dive back. The real nemisis of the ISV against a 50 is the tackle who plays a straight up 4 and forces the QB to make a decision to give or to pull as the other two techniques help the QB to make a PSL decision. The guessing games begin when the SAM LB and the DE switch assignments and the DE now goes to pitch and the LB goes to QB, etc. Your QB must know how to read what they are doing to him.

Wow, rough one for us, we were undefeated up to this point and going in to play the other undefeated team in our league, our defense had not given up over 185 yards in a game all year. We were averaging 41 points a game. We had one of our better weeks of practice and I thought we were ready to go. We lost 33-0 gave up 336 yds on the ground and had less than 100 yds ourselves. About 90% of our team played great, but 2-3 killed us. We started off w/a 4-5 yd run, then a 15 yd pass, another nice run that got called back on a holding call on one of our slots, and it went downhill from there. The left side of our line had missed assignments and looked like they were going on 2 when everyone else was going on 1. We were only down 13-0 about 3/4 of the way through the 1st half and we gave up a 53 yard pass to the TE on 3rd and 8. Came out in the second half, went three and out and promptly gave up a 70 yd run to an off tackle dive that I was screaming from the side line was coming. We had a drive sputter and then gave up another 60 yarder on the same play on 1st down. After watching the film it was the same 3 kids just not getting it done. Unfortunately we only have 24 kids on the team from 9-12th grade, so the bench is pretty bad. I think we'll get better from the loss, but it sure sucked.
SOUNDS LIKE A ROUGH ONE SURE'NUFF. WHEN YOUR LIMITED IN PLAYERS, YOUR GOING TO HAVE THOSE. YOU HAD DONE WELL UP TO THAT GAME, SO JUST KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR DOING AND TRY TO GET THEM BETTER EVERY DAY. ASSES YOUR OFF TACKLE TECHNIQUES TO STOP THE BLEEDING. OFF TACKLE PLAYS ARE THE NEMISIS OF EVERY DEFENSE GOING! I HAVE EVERY CONFIDENCE YOU WILL PUT IT BACK TOGETHER THIS WEEK COACH!!! IF I CAN HELP, DON'T HESITATE TO ASK.
SINCERE THANKS FOR YOUR REPORT.

Maybe you can give me some advice, we run spread option, double wide, double slot, they gave us a 4-2 with man free, press cover on our receivers, when we ran motion, they would kick to a 4-3, we got head up techniques from the tackles and the ends played c gap. PArt of the problem is they were just bigger, faster, stronger than our receivers, we tried running crossing routes to rub off the defenders but we were just getting pushed off our routes. When we pulled it and ran the option, they were getting off the blocks too easily and making plays. Aside from play better, any suggestions?
Sounds to me like there really is no answer for just having run into a team that was better than you. My suggestion as always this far into the seaon is just work diligently each day on your ececution, and try to get better. You know now why I always say "there is no substitute fo talent".

If you see press man again, use a wide bunch formation. If they bring 3 out on them, you should be able to run speed option out the back door, if not you have them out flanked so run option to the bunch.

That's a sound suggestion. But, if they have better athletes, get off blocks that your kids can't hold and just are better all around your in for a tough night no mattter what you do. Been there, done that. Just my opinion as always.
