Last night just proved to me even more why being smart is the most important quality in an option quarterback. In our JV game last night we went into halftime down 19-0. The OC and I decided to hand the keys to the offense to our QB and take advantage of his best qualities. He's a 99 average kid in school, a pretty good athlete, but isn't what anyone would call fast or quick. (Truth be told, he needs a jump rope and a dream.) So, we told the team we are going no huddle and using the veer and midline audibles at the line to call plays. Our QB did an amazing job of reading the defense and getting us in to the correct call based on where the bubble in the defense was and then making correct reads on when to give, when to keep, and when to pitch. We came back and won 20-19 with both of our starting WBs hurt. Just the ultimate example of why if a QB is smart in this offense he doesn't need to be a great athlete.

I agree wholeheartedly. I had a JV kid several years ago who all I had to do was send in a formation and which side of the line we wanted to run veer toward. This kid as a 10th grader could make the inside/outside check with 99% accuracy. It made my job calling plays much easier.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
OPTION IS ALL ABOUT NUMBERS AND I ALWAYS TAUGHT MY QB'S TO MAKE THE CALL FOR WHERE THEY WANTED TO RUN THE PLAY BASED ON WHICH SIDE WE HAD THEM OUTNUMBERED, AT THE LOS. I JUST CALLED IT "PICK A SIDE" AND IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST BASICS TAUGHT TO ALL NEW QB'S.

We didn't even give a side. He picked both the side and either midline or veer. He even broke a few for 10+ yards. The entire offense did a great job of listening and knowing where to go. We were in a balanced formation and not really outnumbering the other team. We basically had him looking at the DL to see where the bigger gaps were. I'm still so excited and all the kids are today as well. Every kid on our team I've seen today has told me how awesome last night was. Now, I just hope we can take that and build for next week.

That is one of the best things about option football...when the kids finally understand what they are trying to accomplish! Suddenly everything makes sense, stupid mistakes are pretty much nill, and everything takes off from there. It is that step that this team I'm assisting with now is not getting past. One of our RB's gets it, and our QB (a freshman) pretty much understands what is going on. The line, however, that's another story...and a long one at that! Keep it up griffin, and best of luck to you.
I agree with you, Coach Easton. It is an excellent basic to teach. I'm trying to convince our OC that we should be doing this. Right now, he only lets our QB flip the dive calls or if we are trying to run away from a defender. We'll get there someday, hopefully.
