This post is basically about just venting. This is my first year as a HC. We haven't been very successful on the field (currently 3-4 with 2 games left to play) and we have been beset with personnel issues throughout the year including a group of freshman who have chosen to quit this week. I talked to them to try to get and understanding of why and I kind of got the impression that on game days too many guys on the team seemed as though they were playing for themselves and those who were quitting didn't like being around those type of players. I take that personally because I really tried to build team unity through different activities during the season. But, I'm also kind of torn about it because I don't respect those who quit for any reason. In my mind quitters are losers no matter what the reason. We also got our first bout of cold weather in Western NY this week and our practices have been absolute garbage due to the kids whining about how cold it is. The overall tone from the kids seems down as well. I feel as though all of this is my fault and I could've avoided it if I had done some things differently throughout the year. I don't know exactly what. But, I really wanted to prove to myself, the Varsity HC and really everybody else that I would be a good JV HC and instead I feel like the worst coach in the world. Has anybody else gone through this or am I the only one?

You have to remember that you are dealing with kids here. I've done the JV head coach thing, and it is not the same as the varsity. The players don't have the same understanding of the game and don't have the same passion for what they are doing. Your biggest goal as a JV coach is to prepare these kids for varsity. Part of that is to find out who is not willing to put in the time and effort necessary to become a successful varsity player. As a JV coach, I always thought of three things at the end of the year,
Are my players fundamentally better than they were when they came to me?
Do my kids know our program's base defenses and our "bread and butter" offensive sets and plays inside and out?
Do I know these players well enough to see their potential and report that to the varsity HC?
If I can answer "yes" to all of these, my JV season was a success. One thing I have learned through coaching football is that the biggest challenge is to deal with individuals--whether they be players, parents, other coaches, etc...the game is the easy part. It is a learning process. Keep that in mind, and next year you will undoubtedly do some things differently. Hold the course for the remainder of the year, be confident, and lead.

This happens frequently in schools that have no TRADITION! Building "tradition" is the key, & it isn't easy. Once you have it - some of those problems cease to exist.
Spend the OFF-0SEASON giving your kids a "CHECK-UP FROM THE NECK UP"! Bring in motivational speakers; have them read motivational books; show the motiovational sports films (IE: "HOOSIERS"; "REMEMBER THE TITANS"; ETC.)!
Best Wishes!
PS: YOU must remain positive, & "stay the course"! Remember Winston Churchill's famnous quote:
(WINSTON CHURCHILL) “Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never – in nothing great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense”!!!
That sucks, I have to say quitting because you don't want to be around guys who are just playing for themselves is just as selfish as just playing for yourself, from the outside looking in it seems like kind of a cop out in order to stay in and not have to play in the cold etc. We have had to shut down our JV program this year because of kids getting hurt or having to move up to varsity, we just ran out of bodies, that led to kids quitting because they knew they weren't going to get any games, just practice, its a vicious circle. I agree with oneback that building a tradition is the key to solving those problems, but it is getting harder and harder to find kids who want to be part of a tradition.
Another thing to remember...you are not in full control of what happens to your team as the JV coach. You can't let that impact your confidence. While a good JV program is essential to the building of a consistent team, there is only so much you can do about what you are given to work with--your best players (that should be JV guys) are often brought up to the varsity to be backups where they will get maybe 10% of the playing time that they would have gotten at the lower level. That's not your problem, that is the HC's issue. Good luck and keep at it!

Thanks guys. I had a momentary lapse of self pity. Practice went well yesterday, even with our limited numbers. I have definitely made it a point to stay positive with the guys who are still with us. The assistant coach and I have talked about it together and we are both making concentrated efforts to staying positive with the kids. Kids moving up to be backups isn't a problem at all here. Our HC says he will never bring a kid up to not be a starter on at least one side of the ball. IN fact, they had one of our most talented guys up with the Varsity during preseason when they weren't sure about a few holes being filled. But, once he saw that those could be filled with upperclassmen, the sophomore was moved back to JV. He is very understanding about that. Thanks for the support and encouraging words. I guess I just needed to get things off my chest.
Thanks, Scott. I have two of their games (NF and Starpoint). We traded. Our game is tonight at 7. We'll see how it goes.
