I have been reading this board off and on for about a year now. I got into football late in life (28) and am playing some 8-on-8 flag football but eventually would love to transition into coaching. So, I read this board both as a leader on my team and with an eye toward eventual coaching. My problem is that late start - while I am fairly athletic and IMO can pick up a lot of the nuances of the game in my own head, I have a hard time with the terminology. Things like Sam and Mike are easy to pick up, but the various techniques, gaps, names of moves, etc. take me a long time to pick up, especially when I am trying to read a post on a message board as opposed to someone in person saying "And this is a ____" and showing me.
Where can I get a good primer on the various terminology used at the coaching level? My local bookstores have a poor selection of coaching materials and trying to google for terms can be difficult. If someone wants to explain it all, great, but I would settle for a few pointers to web sites with terms on them.
What I would suggest is to get in contact with a coach in your area and see if he needs some help during the offseason--even if it's volunteer. Get your foot in the door so that you can get a hold of someone's terminology and absorb some of their conversations. Let him know that you are interested in getting into coaching, and are still learning the nuances of the game (including terminology, etc.). Other than that, use whatever resources you have--watch football--HS, college, pro, whatever. Listen to commentators. Read message boards like this along with other coaching sites. If you can get your hands on any thorough playbooks, you can get a ton from them sometimes. Many times coaches will spell out their preferred terminology right there in their playbook so that their players/coaches are all on the same page as they are. There are playbooks all over the internet that you can get for free or next to nothing. Just jump in and start "treading water."

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
When it doubt.... MAKE UP YOUR OWN! The more coaches specific terminology is stuff you can make up on your own. Such as Formation Names, I can't tell you how many different names I have heard for a Split-back formation or a FB-Pro RIght formation. The terminology that is universal to football is easy to pick up. For example if you have no idea what Trips Right Empty X-Zoom 45325 Sprint Rollout means. (It is a play BTW) Yet you have the diagram in front of you. Make up your own system for calling in that play. I have taken bits and pieces of terminology that I've learned over the years. All the playbooks I've drawn up over the years are like stages of evolution.
Terminology is open to recreation as long as you know the stuff that is considered Universal.
P.S. Speaking of playbooks. I have over 50 just on this computer as well as access to 100's all for free. Please let me know if you would be interested in one and I'll see what i can do. They range from H.S., College, and Pro teams.
