I have read all the posts on the redskins, steelers offense running the counter/power and the zone. The thing I was wondering is what are the companion plays that go with them and what passing concepts do they use. I guess what I am lookinf for is what is the total package.
The original "COUNTER" you referred to (popularized by the Redskins with John Riggins) was a counter to their INSIDE ZONE (all 3 QB's steps were the same to the handoff point, and the RB's first step was the same). In other words - the Counter Right looked like the Inside Zone Left (initially), & vice-versa. Therefore - the Counter fits into the Inside Zone SERIES.
There were also reverses off the Counter,. The "POWER" is the same as the Counter EXCEPT the "trapper" & "wrapper" change. They also had a GOOD play action series from it (both with the QB dropping back off the fake, AND, bootlegging opposite the fake).
This is WAY TO MUCH to explain typing. If you are truely interested - PHONE me at 804-378-0116 (upo to 10 PM/EDT) & I can explain it better!
PS: Joe Bugel has a video (DVD) on the COMPLETE series - you can order it online from GILMAN GEAR site!

I purchased the Bugel tape and both ALex Gibbs tapes from Gilman and should be here friday. I got the Russ Grimm tape from the Cool Clinic coming probably next week. We converted over from a Jet sweep team in mid stride last year and started running the inside zone and the outside zone basically to run play action pass off of those. We were pretty good at throwing but were really not running the zone right. Our off-season project was to learn to run the zone right and find out the companion plays to have an entire system. That is my biggest concern is not to understand the whole offense. I will give you a call thanks so much.
Bugel & Grimm tapes will tell you ALL you need to know on that SERIES. It has been our "BREAD & BUTTER" since 1982!
PS: We teach only TWO SCHEMES:
1. COUNTER/POWER (basically everybody is blocking "ON-INSIDE"), and,
2. ZONE BLOCKING (basically everybody is blocking "ON-OUTSIDE").
Thus - our 4 BASIC runs are: Counter; Power; Ins. Zone; Outs. Zone. We have a little Reverse off the Inside Zone (that does NOT change the blocking). ALSO a "TOSS" (but EVERONE on the TOSS is blocking ON-INSIDE or ON-OUTSIDE - so it fits into our TWO BASIC SCHEMES).
Once you learn to SIMPLIFY the system (as I have mentioned above) it's great! IF I may be of further help - PHONE me at 804-378-0116 up to 10 PM/EDT (I cannot spend enough time typing to give you GOOD answers to your questions).
