I am looking for suggestions on how to align and defend vs spread 3x1 or motion from spread 2x2 to 3x1. In the past we used to slide our linebackers and it ended up being a 3-4 with a cover 3 look. We don't have the personnel anymore to play a two gap nose. I am looking for different alignments that have been successful where you can keep the backers stacked.
When you bump your Backers to the formation, make sure that you mirror the set of the offenisve backs. You want to have a Backer stacked behind the Nose, and one stacked to the side of RB. Doing this will allow you to maintain the integrity of your stack alignment, and adjust to the strength of the offensive set. Remaining stacked behind the Nose will allow him to occupy one gap instead of two. If you have to two gap him, be sure to Pinch your 4 techs. Do you bump your Flanks(spurs/dawgs) to the formation as well?
Thanks for your help. I could use your opinion on this.
One thing I was thinking about was putting both spurs to the 3 reciever side and keeping the backers stacked. My only worry is the backside CB to the one reciever side. I would play cover 3 or 1. We have never really gotten the opponents best reciever ever to the backside. He is always in the slot.
We have done this as well....If you do not not leaving your CB on an Island, you can make a Texas adjustment by walking your stack backer to out on the split, and have your Corner play over top.....This would align a backer over the nose and off set back, as well as place a backer over the split.....:gift;
Have you ever lined your spur over #2 and cheated the FS over to the 3 reciever side. Keep the backers stacked and the other spur to the weakside. Essentailly you are leaving #3 uncovered and the bubble is open. Do you think it is a waste of time to even be thinking about this alignment? The only reason why it crossed my mind is our strongside spur may be one of our top defensive players.
We align on all imediate receivers, so we would walk a stack out on number 3....If the direction is to him, he will cover 3 vertical, and trade him off if he goes to the flat or on a drag....If the direction is away from him, he will attack the flank of the offense, and FS will look for the hot toss to #3......
the way i have played against this formation in the past is as follows:
we would play 1/4 1/4 1/2 coverage..........i would walk the C up on #1 then he would bail to his deep 1/4........the FS would be at 8-10 yards aligned over the OG to the side of the trips and would cover the inside 1/4 to that side...........the stud to the trips side would split the difference between #2 and #3 and would cover flat...........the C away would press the one reciever and lock him up........the backside stud would walk up to the LOS and attack QB.........the 3 LB's are still stacked in this defense...........i would send the Mike..........the Will or Sam would take the RB out of the backfield depending on which side he went..........if the Rb blocks you can send all 3 stacked backers
