Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
our team is looking to run quite a bit of the bear front next year. I am trying to gain some insight as to the technique used. I have heard it is as simple as get them up the field to heel depth then react to the ball. Is it that simple or should i get a little bit more detailed with reads and tech.?? Thanks

We are a 4 man front team as a base but will go to a 5 man front Bear Look quite often and do not change our techniques for the D line. Wheter we are slanting or playing a 0,1,3 etc. we want get off on the ball, play 1/2 a man, attack with hands(sternum and armpit), Read O Linemen near knee, control man, control gap, lock out, rip off block etc.
If we can get penetration into the backfield at the Oline mens heels that would be great. If you are doing this consistenly then you are kicking their but up front. Our philosopy is to engage the O Linemen and keep the LBers as free as possible.
0 tech on the Center. 3 techs on OG's. DE on SE side = loose 5 tech. On the TE side - you will either have a DE OR OLB in an 8 technique coming off the edge.
I highly recommend you get Rex Ryan's video on the subject. If you do not have it already, you should get his book as well "Coaching Football's 46 Defense" too.
I am a big fan of the defense. You will find that the play of the 3 techs is vital. If they can 1) not get reached and 2) not allow the OG to cutoff the LB behind them, you should be successful.
The nose can be a two-gapper or a slant/shoot type.
Look forward to more discussion on the 46.

Thanks for the input. Also, what do you guys feel the weaknesses of this defense are. I know this may sound crazy, but our staff is thinking about comitting to it as our base and doing some different things from it. What do yall think?
That is not crazy. We used to use it as a change up and it was more effective than our base, so we we switched.
Most will tell you it is not a great D vs option. I am not sure what is perfect vs option though. You need secondary support to stop it out of the 46, but that is true of any defense I can think of. If you have a lot of option teams in your league, that is something to consider though.
If may not be the best answer vs an empty set. Again, those are a pain in the neck for most defenses. If you see a great deal of empty, that is also a consideration.
One more thing people will try is counter trey. That is a great play against most defenses if the offense knows how to run it. The 46 IS sound against it, but you need to rep the run fits (5 or 9 tech turns it back, PSLB fits between the pullers, BSLB fits inside 2nd puller). Note: The PS 3 tech and NT should stop the PSOG and center from cutting off the BSLB.

I would rep your Reactions to cross blocks(Tackle blocking down, guard pulling outside), and double teams......:light;
Because the BASE "Bears' 46" plays a match up Cover 1 - I feel it has trouble adjusting to 3x1 sets such as "TE TRIPS" (such as a TE, H-Back, & Flanker one way - with a SE opposite).
Leaves it too vulnerable weakside to Countersm, Speed options, etc.
No more typing time - if QUESTIONS feel free to phone me at 804-378-0116 (up to 10 PM/EDT)
We are looking to bring alot of pressure from this and play alot of man. Also looking at trying to play some disguised cover 3 as well. I just think with all these empty spread sets, something old but different might cause them some problems.
MLB can be assigned to him and/or 9 tech can peel off or collision him.
When I install it, I teach the 9 tech to account for the back out his way. If I decide I do NOT want him to do so, it easy to tell him so. It is harder if you teach him to ignore the back, then all of a sudden ask him to peel off for some reason, IMO.

Scott - we simply (like MOST 4-2 teams) "slide" the LBers from a 4-2 Cover 1 to a 4-3 Cover 1. Only 3 guys have to move. Phone if this is not clear (804-378-0116 (up t0 10 PM/EDT).
e.g. Speed option left, OT veer release for WLB, OG and C combo 1 tech to MLB, pitch off 5 tech. True, the FS can help out but FS can help out in the 46 too.

I believe most bear teams don't adjust to trips the way you have will the mike LB off set weak that helps alot with the weakside run game. How would you adjust to these formations.
Note: CB, WLB and SLB might switch based on match up. MLB may be anywhere from 40 to a 00 depending on what the opponent likes to do.

Caveman = HOW we would adjust to you is STRICTLY based upon scouting report. We LOVE to have a PHYSICAL "Will LBer" (like James Farrior - leading tackler on the Steelers - best "D" in NFL history). James played for us his last 3 years in H.S. We would have SOMETHING prepared for the things you do BEST!
