Hey Coaches,
I was wondering what you 4-3 guys think is the ideal matchup for the CB in cover 4? I have read Tim Simons and Mike Freeman's "Coaching Football's 4-3 Defense" and their base Cover 4 has the CBs in off man coverage (can play press as well) on #1 with the safeties essentially playing robber technique on #2. I have also heard of coaches who have both the CBs and S's read #2. If #2 breaks outside, the CB takes him while the S backs up to take #1. Some examples:
Versus "Smash", they are reading #2's release as vertical. The S's job is to carry him vertical, the CB shoots his eyes to #1 as #2 is no longer his responsibility. In a bend-don't-break manner, they will have the CB pay loose on #1's hitch so that he is somewhat "in the way" of the corner and then breaks on the hitch throw. In Simon's Cover 4, it would end up being a double team on the hitch with CB and OLB and the safety would be alone on the corner.
Versus #1 vert, #2 flat the safety reads #2 as flat and immediately passes him off to the OLB/corner and looks to go after #1's vertical. The CB uses the same technique as the smash and plays with a cushion on the flat but breaks on the ball. In Simon's Cover 4, it would be the OLB by himself on #2"s flat as the CB will take the vertical and the Safety will pass off the flat route and look to double #1.
Versus Curl/Flat, The S reads flat and goes to rob #1. the CB reads flat by #2 and plays loose on it to appear to take away the curl and then break on the flat route and rally with the OLB. In Simon's verison, there would be a double team of the CB and S on #1 while the OLB has the flat route by himself.
It seems that some route combos are better defended with the "Read" (Smash, Post-Wheel) and other combos are better defended with the CBs in man (Fade/Flat).
Opinions?
Thanks!
