I'm a college student who can no longer play football because of a career ending injury i got during my freshman year. I enjoy coaching more than anything and I've been coaching at a high school throughout college. However, I'm worried about being able to coach after college, as I am an Accounting/Finance major and probably won't have the ability to teach. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could balance a job with coaching?
Don't get too concerned. I would guess at least 50% of the coaches out there do not work in the school they coach with. If you would have the ability to get your schedule to have the flexibility, you can make it work easily. I've coached with everything from concrete workers to businessmen to attorneys...You may have to volunteer at first to show the HC that you can make your hours work, but I would guess you can make it happen.

There is nothing that will show a man's true character like the 2 yard line.
i have been working and coaching since i have been coaching in High School. you need to be straight with your supervisor and tell him/her that you need to make your schedule flexible enough during the football season so that you can coach. I work from 6am-2:30pm during the season and then shift back to a regular 9-5 shift once the season is over with the flexibility to go to the early schedule if need be during spring ball. But ususally spring practices are later in the day for my school.
Its good you got the coaching bug. Depending on how important this is to you, you may want to look for jobs that allow you a certain amount of flexibility in scheduling. In this job market, that may be too much to ask going in. But, keep in mind you are young. You have your whole life to coach.
It is possible. I graduated high school and was a varisty assistant the season after I graduated. I coached all through college, and my first realy job did not allow me to coach. I took a two season break, and then found a job that would allow me to coach (I have always worked in the IT field). This is my 11 year coaching. It is possible. Dont get discouraged if it doesnt happen right away (finding a job that allows you to coach), because you are still young.

mdunny,
I'm actually in my first year as a staff accountant at a CPA firm, and here's some advice, try to land a job at a place that does primarily tax work, or who is willing to put you in the tax department. Most will want to have you work as an auditor early on, which by the nature of the work doesn't lend itself to leaving at 2pm, so things will be much easier if you can get on with a tax oriented firm. Good luck.
First spend a few bucks and get certified as a coach in your state. Most schools require even volunteers to be sanctioned or registered.
Then look into getting certified as a Substitute Teacher for those schools in your area. Where I'm at its up to each school district to line up their subs.
Find a school HS or Middle School where the Coach is willing to take on a volunteer. Middle Schools dont usually have a huge athletic budget so that would be my first choice to get a prime spot. High Schools may or may not have openings but at the very least they are always looking for Special Teams help.
The folks have outlined the difficult part and that is finding a job where you have flex time or get off early enough to get to practices.
As a last resort, look into obtaining a Teaching Certificate. Some areas aren't quite as strict as others. I can get my Masters in less time than a Teaching Certificate where I'm at. It's ludicrous!!
There are always youth teams that need a football smart guy to help out.
Good Luck and dont give up your passion for the game.
Its not about how much YOU know about the game, its about how much you share that knowledge with the people around you.
